I've hunted Elk, Deer and Sheep with rifle and bow - but i'm looking to get into coyote hunting this year. I don't have any buddies that do it - so i'm not sure where to start.

Would love to find a Coyote hunting buddy in the Edmonton area. Any advise also appreciated.

Get a good call, I have always had decent luck with a wounded rabbit call. Contact farmers in the area, there really isnt much crown land close to Edmonton to shoot on. Both Parkland and Strathcona counties have shooting restrictions so be aware of where you are. Dress warm, in layers. - dan

Head south to ranch country. Be careful not to skyline yourself and call them out of the brushy coulees.
I just returned from a mule deer hunt and almost every group of bucks had 3 or 4 coyotes harassing them, it’s going to be a hellish winter for them.

Yeah the best would be to go out with someone to show you the do's and don'ts

If you cant find someone, just head over to youtube and start watching. Little bit of trial and error, and youll be knockin them down in no time.

Just remember, they can see, hear and smell better then we can. :)

good luck

Feel free to pm me with any questions and I can help much as I can.
With your previous experience with other game I would assume you have some ideas of land that you would go to? If so talk to the landowners and inquire as to where they see coyotes day to day then head there.
Approach every stand carefully without skylining your self too much or making a lot of noise.
Always watch the downwind as coyotes are most likely to come in on the downwind side.
Don't overthink the calls too much when you start. Keep it simple and you will learn fast.
Check out lucky duck and foxpro on YouTube as well as foxpro, predator hunter, Eastman's predator pros, and les jonsons early podcasts as they go into great detail on learning coyote hunting

X2 on always see the downwind side, they go for that more than anything. Tons of tutorial online. A simple hand call like sceery ap4 or 5 can do a lot

When you get good at it...everything else becomes a walk in park.

Oh and be ready for more than just coyotes. Me and a buddy have cougars from coyote calling. We’ve had way more than that come in too, if it’s got claws or fangs it will happen. Muley’s will run in on you too.

I'm going to try some hand calls. I have en electronic, but I need more variety.

I got spoiled, first time out with an electronic call. Boom, came running in at 60 yards.

Not so easy now....

This is all really good information. I'll have a look through some call options. I don't have any real connections that come to mind for landowners with coyotes but i may need to do some door knocking it sounds like.

Don't ever think the hand calls are hindering you. I regularly shotgun coyotes with only hand calls. Had one sneak up on me through a low spot just last week that was just 10 yards away.

oh and you'll have a good day to several slow days, I never found it very predictable, 25 minute minimum on stand from first call, and you can only hit the same spots every few weeks, they need time to forget, or you have to pick different spots and sounds on a given property to fool them again, it's very challenging, unpredictable, and rewarding, they are hunting you, they are smart, small, and fast...butt seat pad, shooting sticks or sitting height bipod are what I'll typically use, get your back into something, use shade to your advantage when possible and a bush to your back, just rambling

Awesome advice here. Finding locations/permissions is going to be my biggest hurdle now i think. I've got some calls in the mail to try out. I'm already more or less geared up with a good tripod and well suited rifle, etc. I do live on a 17acre property and have seen/shot the odd fox when they are dumb enough to approach my chicken coop. I know there are Coyotes in the area, sometimes i hear them howling and going nuts in the evenings - just getting them to come into a space where I can shoot them safely/legally is going to be tough.
