Since you like the XD, then get an XD 9 / 40. They are excellent pistols. 9mm is a good all round calibre, although 40 has a bit more bang! Best bet is to organise to test fire as many pistols as you can and decide what you like best. Stay away from 45 GAP - you will have problems finding a good supply of ammo and it is relatively expensive.
