me and a friend would like to try spring black bear hunting but we have never been bear hunting.we hunt alot and we hunt everything around here but we don't know were to start like were to go what to set up for bait what to bring for guns.were would be the best area to hunt blacks?we are allowed two tags each right?we want to stay in alberta.we have been told that beaver carcasses work good for bait.is this true?we were thinking for guns maby a 45/70 for him and I could bring my sako .300wsm.then each bring a short 12 for camp guns?we are in halkirk alberta were would be the closest great bear spot with easy land access?thanx

Go straight west...Nordeg, Mountainair, anywhere around Rocky is good. Heck I talked to a rancher at Csar two years ago that shot a bear on his place there. Forget the bait though. Only certain areas allow baiting. Two bears only for certain zones as well. 45.70 and 300 are great. 30.06, 308, 280 any of the above. My camp gun is the same gun that I hunt with. why confuse the issue.

If you want to travel a bit...north and west of Edmonton ie. Swan Hills, Slave Lake, Whitecourt, Grande Prairie. All crown land and most zones have sunday hunting.

As far as baiting areas are concerned...don't know..I don't hunt over bait.

Closest for you??? Prob around Caroline.

If you want, keep in touch next spring, you can tag along with me and a cpl of freinds that go out every spring. Its always great to see someone get their first bear. Area we go we see lots of bears and only a cpl of hrs from Edmonton.

As for guns - think 'deer'. Anything that works well on deer tends to do well on bear.

Just remember - bears are tricky and will go down and suddenly jump up and take off a few mins later.

With bear - shoot till they're dead. Don't be afraid to 'waste meat' to anchor a bear by shooting it twice (beats tracking them in the woods).
