I love those monsters. I still don't understand the "why!?" but have shot one and a 460 and loved both, would never own either but loved shooting them all the same.

I love those monsters. I still don't understand the "why!?" but have shot one and a 460 and loved both, would never own either but loved shooting them all the same.
Loose can mean detach also so if you do not want to detach or loose a finger you don't put it in front of the cylinder gap of a revolver.
When you lose the hounds, different things happen than if you loose them!
Loose is 'it does not fit tightly'.
Lose, is 'it can't be found'.
Maybe we should just dumb it down to spelling it "Looze". Maybe "Lewz". Yeah. It's a peeve. Read what is written, and then it stops making sense because the writer put in the wrong word, and changed the meaning completely.
I've got a pretty good grasp of the English language, and 'detach' seems inappropriate for "loose". Contextual issues, I guess, and as definitions go, it'd be pretty sketchy to use it without the proper context. "Release" or "let go" fits better than "detach", but it would have to be in the proper context. But whatever.

Damage from muzzle blast
On a similar note, on the topic of how powerful the gas blast from firearms is; Mind you these are modern smokeless firearms, but I think it's still relevant.
I just thought of a video I did some time back on muzzle blast and how fast the gas expands directly upwards and sideways when it exits the barrel. Keeping in mind the pressure at the cylinder gap would be significantly higher, have a look at these. The cans and cardboard boxes are empty, the muzzle blast is what does all the damage:
And here's a black powder revolver shot at 1200 frames/second again. In the last frame the cylinder gap blast comes out about 8 inches in one frame or 1/1200s, for an average velocity of 800fps over that length of time. FWIW.

I know it well from and unhappy childhood accident involving stripping my toe off the bone.
Yeah. Painful just thinking about that. <shudder>. Ugh.
The Doc took a chance and sewed mine back around the bone and it healed well enough, but it was a long summer!

Doesn't have to be a BP revolver or a .500. A .38 target load will hurt you big time.
"...what is it these days with..." The education system sucks. They pass anybody whether they can read and write or not. Isn't a new thing either. Had a Cadet, long ago, who graduated out Grade 13. Kid wrote course reports but spelt the word 'him', h-e-m. Asked him how to spell the word and he said H-E-M, sir.
