I bought a 3.5-10x40(I know this is overkill) Leupold to put on my Imperial Defense but it is not easy to pull the charging handle with the scope in the way. Any other suggestions for a scope that will work. I know I can always mount it on the carry handle and not the flat top, but I think that may be too high? Also mounts for the carry handle have been a pain to find.

I used Burris x-high tacticals on mine along with a Burris Timberline 2-7x26 (5 inches of eye relief) mounted forward on the rail. Worked like a champ. Lots of room to access the charging handle. BTW, there is a Timberline 4.5-14x32 AO with 5 inches of ER as well

You can use scope risers to get it a litle higher, or you may want to consider a tactical latch (bigger/wider charge handle) that allows you to pull more from the side with one hand...

I bet you can't even see properly through the scope as you have it mounted! It is too low. As AR's have no drop in the stock you must mount the optics higher than you normaly would with a bolt action rifle. Once you mount the scope higher and a little bit more forward (People always mount thier scopes too far to the rear on an AR, it must be mounted just about were the rear sight would be so you don't kiss it when you are in the prone position) it will get rid of the cocking handle problem you are having and elevate the scope you can use it properly. Mounts for the carrying handle are available at P & D for about 25 or 30 bucks!

Ok, you think the high QRW`s are still ok to use when I mount on the carry handle?

Sorry to Hijack, but can you post detailed pics of your IDS AR? I am curious too see fit/finish / quality, etc.

I will once I have finished putting all the toys on it, I am waiting for a mount and will be changing the scope to a Bushnell 3200 fixed 10x40mm and a few other things. Someone else has posted his though.

As stated, typical AR mounts set the center of the scope at 1.5" above the stock. This replicates the factory iron sight settings. You may find a little more or less is comfortable, depending on how you like your cheek weld and the scope you use. Going lower than 1.5" can make for fairly uncomfortable prone shooting, but again this is a generality.
With regard to the eye relief, that will depend on where you like to mount the stock (Some guys mount the stock so that their nose is touching the charging handle - I like it where I'm a couple inches back) and what the eye relief of the scope is. Generally, with longish eye relief, you'll likely want to install the scope fairly far forward.

The best thing to do is loosely install your set up, and try it in all positions you will be using. Hold the positions for a couple of minutes to see if the set up causes you any strain.

I'm sure most know this basic exercise, but for those that don't:

-get into a position where you are centrally & comfortably aiming at a target, and where your breathing only shows a vertical transition between target and sights. (there should be no horizontal movement, as this indicates straining to stay centered).
- get into your breathing routine and adjust your vertical slightly where you're on target at the exhale.
-continue with your breathing and close your eyes for three reps.
- on your third exhale, open your eyes to see where you're sights are in relation to your target.
- With a comfortable position, you will be on target or very close - if you're straining, it will be a different story.
