Cleaned her up bought some ammo and now its time to let her rip !!
My first rifle when I was 14 was a Jungle Carbine (No.5 MK1) my father and uncle gave me. In those days you could shoot Does and on my first outing that I was allowed to pack the Carbine, I harvested two and my Uncle and Father were beside themselves. In those days I had a parents Permit and the night before the hunt I couldn't sleep a wink. This Carbine is one year older than me (1947) the last year of manufacture, all numbers match I was fortunate as everything is tight and well maintained. Rifling is bright with no evidence of pitting grooves and lands still look strong with good edges. my father served with the Canadian Army in WWII in the Pacific theater thats why the Jungle Carbine holds a special place for me. Being a young kid looking to buy my first car I sold that Blonde Coloured Carbine and kicked my ass ever since. My wife and I went to the gun show in Chilliwack to meet some friends there and the old Dame was laying on the first table by the enterance. I checked out the lightening cuts and the serial number which all matched even on the stock, all except the magazine. I checked who the manufactured was and wondered if I bumped into an old dear friend. Had a hundred on me and asked the vender( Cliff ) if he would take a deposit, well the guy is a gentleman what can I say. My wife and friends were really paitent the whole time I ignored them while checking out the old Dame's foundation. I am very pleased with her and now I have the bug. Soon she will be getting a step sister from Ontario lol !!!!

The No5s are an excellent brush gun;not finely accurate, but accurate enough. I got one in essentially new condition 50 yrs ago and have used it as my favourite timber rifle ever since. Long ago I fitted it with a Bishop butt with monte-carlo comb and a Weaver T01 scope base. Its had a number of scopes, the ideal one being a Redfield 23/4x Widefield. This rifle has filled a lot of freezers over the yrs-mulies, whitetails, moose and bear. It is light, handy and hard hitting with a 180gr bullet. Who needs a 7mm whatchamacallit magnum to shoot a deer @ 100yds?

Well Purple, I have many others but as I stated above this one has a special place. It seems the older I get the more in a circle I go. I find I stand at the safe looking and trying to decide which one goes but any time I jump in the jeep or truck this baby won't be staying home. I have to find a nice bayonet for her, I have a 1913 P17 that I had on my 1897 Winchester trench gun that is in really nice shape, I think its the Canadian one with the two slashes on the grip, no cracks no damage or someone trying to sharpen the edge just plain good looking stock. So if someone has a line on a No.5 Mk1 bayonet for sale or trade please let me know.

Beautiful little carbine, my favourite Lee-Enfield! I had three, one was near mint. I kept one beater because it is the most accurate L-E I have ever owned. When we tested most of my military rifles at 600m. that No.5 was right in there with the best of them. Very consistent. The top performer was the Brazillian 1908 7x57, next was an SMLE, then the No.5 which almost tied the SMLE. The No.4, incidentally, came in 5th!

Roger that, I used a small band of bicycle inner tube in the base of the barrel band and folded a shim out of tin foil around the lip of my forend she doesen't move now but I dont think it matters on mine because I can run a dollar bill under the barrel and I have no contact points under the top part of the forend -it appears they are free floated. so it wouldn't really matter.
Nothing touching to change point of impact.

Mine ('45 BSA) isn't such a lucky survivor. The irons were removed and the rear sight ears ground off so it could be drilled and tapped. The work done is very good but still bubba... The bore, like most JC's, is very good and luckily aside from what looks like varathane they left the wood alone. I grabbed some angle iron from work and redrilled/tapped the holes to make a mount for one very old Weaver KV 2 3/4-5X that I nabbed off the EE. Still waiting on a weaver base and have a little more tweaking to do on the left feed lip of the mag but its getting there. It'll be my ugly retro sporter, all in terrible condition and cheaply acquired.

Well here is the old Dames step sister, right now she is undressed, we have scrubed the rust off her with ample amounts of solvent and used harsh brushes but she is starting to clean up real fine.
We boiled the stock in hot water twice took about two hours and all the old cosmoline and oil was floating in the top of the bath water. I waited till the stock was good and dry then took 0000 steel wool to it rubing with the grain,No sand paper to this stock. Next will be Boiled Linseed Oil many many coats. I was lucky a fellow Nutter met me in Langley at Whole Sale Sports to hand her over she was dry and rusting pretty good, the reciever and bolt are a match and the rifling (6 groove) is sharp and bright with no pitting or rust evident. I will take my time oiling her up and can't wait to see what she looks like. One more coming from Ontario to clean again matching reciver and bolt. Now I really need a bayonet for the collection.

It must of been off in a corner of this guys basement or cabinet for years. The bolt head on the old Dame is a number 1 and so is the one on the step sister but it has more wear than the rest of the bolt which is black and the bolt head is almost chrome coloured. I think I need to get them head spaces checked.
