thanks in advance

I don't have an extra barrel, but I am in the process of having my own Savage 99 rebarreled with a 26" Shilen, and I can't wait to have it back. I plan to have the barrel in a full octagon, too. Good luck on your project. If you can't find someone with an extra barrel, then contact Mysticplayer, Obtunded, or Juanvaldez here on the boards. All three are barrel dealers, and I haven't heard anything bad about any of them.

Whats involved in rebarreling these old bush busters? I'd really like to make a 308 or 300 into a 260 Rem. I haven't bought one yet, but I'd really like to know whats involved in a swap such as this. Also, are replacement barrels direct fit or are they just tubes that need threads cut?

Just tubes. Sometimes bought as straight sided tubes, others can be had already pretty close to final dimensions on the outside.

Savage barrels and some Rem700 barrels can be got that you can just screw in and go. OK, screw in, check headspace, tighten down the nut, and go. Pretty much everything else gets to deal with having a guy with a lathe thread the barrel to fit, as well as cutting the chamber with a chamber reamer.

Take a look around the Brownell's site and search for "barrel" and you will see they pretty much run the gamut from pretty much ready to use, to requiring a lot of work, and everything between.

Cheers
