Getting all the pieces together for the next project rifle. Decided on the the caliber {50cal.} but undecided on the chambering {cartridge}.
The base action is a Ruger#1 and the barrel is a 1-18" twist 50 cal x 29"L.
I am looking for a "Canadian " Gunsmith that has experience in chambering and fitting barrels to #1 actions and hopefully will have a reamer in a cartridge that will work in the #1 action without major mods to the block etc.
So if you know of a smith that fits the bill leave me a note as to who that might be.

Also open to suggestion as to what cartridge other than 50BMG that I should have built. I'm looking to use it for punching big holes in paper and perhaps as a fun hunting rifle. The 1-18" twist will work for cast bullets to keep the cost of projectiles down to earth.

Ron Smith or Bevan King could do it easily. .50/140 or .50 Alaskan depending on how much ouch you want.

.50/460 Wby, and do it yourself you big baby! You might have to take a quick trip to Cuba to get it going right though.

Big Baby

Rob there ain't enough Cuban rum in Whitehorse for me to do the job myself never mind the two of us.:p By the time we would be finished the reamer would be near worn out and the barrel would most likely be handgun length.

And? It's all about the fun of the project. Maybe we could get it on your handcannon in the end.

There is always our friend to clean it up!

BTW Jim, I do have an posibility if you want to make a .50/140, I bought that reamer a long time ago. You could talk to Dave about the .50 Alaskan also as he made that.

Don't underestimate the possibilities of a big bottle of Cuban rum and a fresh pail of Crisco, I'll bet that is not the first time that has been said.

In assending order of power, my list would include -

.500 Nitro Express
.500 Jeffery
.505 Gibbs.

I'd get Dave Jennings in Pritchard BC to do the work. I expect I'll have a similar project for him next year. What make is your barrel?

A while back, I did some research on a big bore rifle. With a Ruger #1 you can forget about all the problems of getting the magazine to feed. My suggestion would be to look hard at the 500 A Square which is a 460 Weatherby necked up ( and slightly improved) to 50 calibre. The real benefit is the availabiltity of quality (reasonably fairly priced) brass and dies. If you did not have the 50 calibre barrel, there is a 550 variation on the same case but dies are expensive and bullets are scarce.

50

Ron nelson in prince george has a reamer for the 50/460,510 wells,50 a square, what ever you want to call them. Some guys in Smithers have them.
Fun stuff!!! I have the barrel ,I just lost interest and didnt get one made.
