Wanted: CAD file for M14 receiver, trigger group

If you guys are at all serious. My cost for the fitment areas of the receiver, barrel and gas system was about $900. This was taken from the drawings posted already and actual measurements from a Norc receiver to verify. Keep in mind though that there are no internal parts and no trigger group files. I only had made what was needed for the parts being built. :D I guess if I was able to recover most of that cost i would be willing to open source it, honestly I think its only fair cause I had to make the investment and my time to get to where I am with this stuff. I don't really think its right that someone else gets to come and compete with my on my dime, I'm sure you can all understand that.

Further to that: I think an open source CAD file of the M14 might be one of the most significant items of interest for the firearms community. If this ideal could spread virally to other types and styles of firearms, namely the AR platform, there is no end to what could be developed by any hobbyist, small business or enterprise. I think it could inspire technologies and entirely new platforms based on these excellent, time proven designs.

It's much more than a simple CAD file guys: you're empowering individuals.

I say, let's get it done!

I think we should start a new thread, perhaps with a poll. Would you donate to an open source CAD file development of the M14 rifle? What say you Supra? Hook it up and as I said, I'll be the first to donate. Maybe if you got say, 20 people interested, we could all donate $50 each? I'm in, more if needed of course, but I think we could get 20 guys in if they understood what it could mean to the future development of new parts.

Sure, if you want to spearhead this I'm good to go. Keep in mind though that there is no way you could make a receiver from these files as they lack the unnecessary details due to my current needs, I would expect the price to be closer to double at least for a complete receiver and barrel model.

What CAD system would you like the this in? Autocad 3d? solidworks? mastercam?

I don't have mastercam... But I can get the drawings we have into an ACAD model I think... There are open source CAD systems like BRL if you want this truly open source?

It would give me a project to work on...

And are we wanting this in the metric (Norinco) or SAE .. If it's the Norinco.. I'll have to breakdown one of mine... to make sure that there are no variances in anything other then the threads. Unless someone has a receiver they want to sell or loan me...

I think DWG files are universal in that we can all get the DWG reader as a free download. I would say Norinco M14, but I didn't think there were many differences in the old M14 designs.

I know there are some threading differences between the Norinco and the Springfield...

DWG format is used primarily as the 2D (Drawing) standard.
Universal 3D models use IGES (.IGS), or STEP (STP), files.
Conversion from 3D CAD to either IGES or STEP results in a "dumb" model that contains geometry but no features (history tree).

No finding a need and filling it for a profit is business/ free enterprise.
Which I'm 100% supportive of.
Helping your neighbour build their barn knowing they would help you is community spirit.

I was referring to our CGN M14 community since it is this community that would benefit first and foremost.

If I may offer a little advice,

we should start with proper 3d models, which can be then directly manipulated with on the computer, dumped to CNC, or flattened into blueprints so that people can do it "the old fashioned way".

It would be advantageous to have it in a model that mastercam (or other CAD/CAM software) can read and manipulate. This would allow a lot of flexibility.

I've got my Norc M14 if I can offer some sort of help. I'm a super newbie machinist, but I'm a high-end computer guy professionally.

Well, we certainly need more open spirit and cooperation if this is going to go anywhere. Putting this into the open source arena would mean a lot.

What the hell is this, a Joe Stalin Communist love in?

You guys are going on about free CAD files to produce parts. Then someone mentions keeping it in a format that can be read by a free CAD program. If you can't afford a CAD program, how can you afford to make parts? Who is going to use these free drawings? some guy making s**t ass mounts out of angle iron in his garage?

All you guys touting "community spirit" are just too cheap to do it right. Any one who has spent the hours measuring and reverse engineering something to just giving it out for free is a damned fool.

The SolidWorks Engineering Stimulus Package provides free SolidWorks 3D CAD software to engineers seeking to develop, upgrade, or refresh the valuable 3D CAD...

Here is the url link:
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/esp/engineering_stimulus_package.html

I believe the free version of SolidWorks will be usable for 90 days before it expires which gives us enough time for making some 3D parts. If there is any thing I could help please pm me. Cheers.:D

Do the rest of us a favour and shut up.

I have access to CAD software through work, and I'm not too bad at it. I also have cost effective access to a waterjet, milling machine and I have my own lathe.

I have very little money, but at the very least I could still make parts for my own rifle.

If the m14 platform makes the move towards open-source parts, it would make world of difference of introducing new shooters to an easily customizeable rifle that is cost effective to work on.

Well said Navy, WELL SAID. This open source attempt is for the hobbyists out there that might want to make a custom part. Having this info. (in CAD format) would just make it easier and it would encourage computer-based innovation on the platform. This has nothing to do with "communism." It's just access to information that should be freely available in CAD format. CAD drawings are already available, they're just not available in an electronic form you can manipulate.

As a Laid off CNC machinist with acess to quite a few idle cnc machines, I Think a decent cad file could be very useful to guys like me with no work but lots of skills. I just got One of these New M-14's and Ive got some spare time on my hands. I was thinking of some gunparts....

Glo - Where would these Cad files be? Ive got lots of them for other firearms.

Id be willing to help out in comunity spirit.
