wanted: Post war P38 - Walther P1 or P4

You need to apply for access to the Equipment Exchange and place a "WTB" Wanted To Buy ad.

The P4 is a prohibited firearm so you won't be able to find one of those unless you have the appropriate 12(x) license. P1 or P38 should be fairly easy for you to find. I would check Ellwood Epps in Orillia, they quite often have P38's listed for sale.

Hi,

Thanks for the Epps tip.

P4 is a 12(6)?
My understanding is that it a improved version of the P1 with the frame issues fixed.

Does the P4 have a slightly shorter barrel to wind up as a prohib??

see ya

Peter

The P4 has a hexagonal pin inserted crosswise in the forward part of the frame to support the battering to the aluminum alloy frame of the pistol in recoil, and it has a slightly shorter barrel than either the P-38 or P-1. The only known factory-produced "snubbie" P-38s were short-barrelled P-4s. The P1 was the immediate post-WWII development of the P-38 and has an aluminum alloy frame and the elimination of the removable firing pin cover of the original P-38. Many P1s were produced under license in France.

A P1 with or without the hex pin is still a P1. Mine doesn't have one but many of them do.

Unfortunately a P4 is a shorter barreled version of a P1 with a 104mm barrel; therefore prohibited. 106mm is the shortest a barrel can be before it is deemed prohibited.

This site has an interesting comparison between P1 versions: ht tp://www.waltherforums.com/forum/classics/13677-p1-vs-p1.html

The Walther P4 is not a 12(6) prohibited firearm by reason of it's 110mm barrel length. The mechanically similar Walther P38K is on account of it's 70mm barrel length. A number of West German police surplus P4s were imported for sale in the late 80s/early 90s. The P4 is fairly scarce, but they do turn up from time to time. I think they would be valued a bit higher than the post-war Walther P1 in similar condition.

And good timing....I think I'll flog my enhanced P1 ex-bundeswehr on the EE this week lol

I have many P4 Walther pistols in my collection and they are restricted. They are from Border Police. Consecutive numbers, 1 2 and 1 2 3 They are
all in mint condition because they were replaced with HK's
