Hi Im new to the site, introduced myself in the introduction section and now I would like to ask for some advice. I got my first gun, a model 29-2 two years ago and have since bought a desert eagle .44, an HK mark 23, another model 29-2 8-3/8 and a GSG 1911 .22 for my wife to use as a stepping stone and introduction into the hobby.

What I know about a 1911 colt could fit on the head of a pin but im learning. My problem is that I like iconic guns (at least I feel they're iconic) and gravitate to them. I think a 1911 is a staple in a collection because its such an important innovation and I think they're cool. When I read the threads here I see people suggesting modern re-invented versions (like springfield) and I wonder if im missing out on something the real deal offers whether it be character, short-comings or just the plain old cool factor of the original design. I like classic cars for the feeling they offer from that era vs a new mustang for example that can out-perform an old car in every way.

My question is, is a new 1911 copy thats better in every measurable way giving up something only a 1911 from 1917 can offer? Or am I foolish to consider an old gun when a new one will deliver?

There are so many brands of 1911's out there, that you can find them in many levels of quality. Decide on a price point and then you can narrow down your choices first. Then you can go looking for what you would like.

Sorry if I got your question wrong but I believe you mean getting a vintage original 1910's colt 1911?

If that's the case nothing you can buy today including colts will replace that. Not because old ones are better (they are definitely not) but just for cool factor.

If all you want is a new 1911 then choosing Colt or Springfield or anything else really doesn't matter, it's like choosing a Ford or a Chevy, pick whichever floats your boat.

All depends on what you want to spend, or if you want the history, or if you want a cheap shooter.

if you want iconic, colt or springfield

Well, the 1917 can offer what amounts to something that resembles what drunken chimpanzees with hand files can accomplish vs a modern, tight tolerance, properly tuned machine could offer.

To each their own and for different reasons...Personally (flame suit on) I think "Colts" are overrated (and certainly overpriced). YMMV

Make sure to get a Colt...

After that you shouldn't feel guilty about any other 1911 you may want!!

I like that idea!

Cost is secondary if its something I just cant live without. I just don't know enough about them yet to make an informed purchase and if the cost of a colt can be justified vs a modern version.

These are two must haves in my humble opinion.
Colt rail gun is awesome! I've had a few 1911s over the years and this is my favourite.

bb512... the real question is if you could even find an original Colt 1911 in very good to excellent condition without blowing the bank. Such as classic cars, original in mint condition is the way to go if you are heading down the serious collector route but if you just want a good shooter, the closest you will get to the Colt 1911 mystique is a new Colt 1911, IMO. It will still cost less then a Kimber.

You should try a few at the range, most fellas won't mind. you will find that even though they are all quite similar there are big differences between them. A $250.00 Norinco will work just fine, but when compared to a $5000.00 custom Nighthawk, or Wilson Combat, they won't feel the same at all. The difference is like going from a Hyundai to a Corvette.

More like a Lada to Corvette Laugh2

I would consider myself a collector but one that will never have a safe queen. If its an old gun then it'll look used when I get it and Ill continue to use it. Not worried about preserving one for the next guy. That said if I found a perfect example of a 100 year old gun I would pass on it.

Nevermind JP, this is the one I am adding. similar to my Competition, but factory checkering. Hope they do more like this next year.

Colt Combat Unit™ Rail Gun®

BB512, start a herd, the stampede is awesome. Just be warned you can't stop at 1.
