I am looking at either a Reminton 700 in 308 or a Tikka T3 Tactical in 308. Both would need a shorter stock for it to be comfortable for me to shoot. My question is what is a better rifle to start with for distance shooting and where would I find a collapsible stock like you would find on an AR so I can adjust it to fit me or is there something else that would work better. An other recomendations for rifles and or equipment for someone wanting to start in distance shoot would be great too.

Both these are repeaters. In 308 there is enough recoil that a solid bottom action is stiffer and can be properly bedded.

A used target rifle would be a better choice. It would come with an adjustable, solid stock, a quality single shot action, fast lock time and a high quality longer barrel for higher velocity. 30" barrels are the most common.

Depends on what you ultimately have in mind with your shooting. If you are talking plinking on crown land there are more economical choices than if you wish to actually try your hand at some organized club shooting.

It also depends on what you mean by long range, and finally depends on whether you want to re-load your own or buy factory ammo.

A Savage FTR rifle is as precise as you will find in a factory rifle. They also make 2 models of F-Class rifle that are superbly accurate, but these do not use readily available or inexpensive factory ammo.

I love Tikka rifles, and I have owned 2 tactical models. (as well as T3 Lites) These shoot extremely well out of the box and there their stocks have spacers for length of pull adjustment.

Jim is correct though, a used customized rifle is s great way to start.

You can get a custom made stock from manners with whatever lop you need for both the tikka and remingtion. I think the tikka is a nicer action then remington. You can also look at savage. They have a new rifle that just came out that has the style of stock you are looking for(adjustable).

Robertson Composite Stocks

If you're looking for an adjustable rifle stock, then check out Ian Robertson's Stocks. I have one on my Rem 700. Good Luck!

I want to have a rifle that i can shoot at a somewhat greater distance than my current AR / pistol collection and also double as a hunting rifle. I want it more for plinking and hunting that competition but that is always an option. I want something that i can mod and change as i bet better and need to and will fire decent on factory ammo.

If you want a 'AR' collapsible stock... there's always the tube gun stock!

You can put which ever but stock you want... and Canada Custom has now decided that these items are not a prohibited device ;)
