Wanting to try a 1911...any thoughts?

Want to move away from Tupperware and thinking 1911. Have a Sig 226 xtreme and don’t love it. Rented a 1911 the other day and enjoyed it. Looking for 9mm and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts? I would like something with a rail. Springfield seems nice- don’t want to spend over $1750. Thanks CGN

Already have a CZ SP-01 and really want a CZ P-01 but can’t find one. So willing to try 1911.

I don't understand people wanting a 1911 in 9mm.
A 1911 in .45 is very soft shooting.
It's a pleasure to shoot a 1911 in .45..

I own 2 1911's
My very first handgun was a Springfield Stainless Loaded which I still have to this day.
I installed a Wilson Combat short trigger, S&A magwell, and had a trigger job done on it.

My second is a Les Baer Premier II with the 1-1/2" guarantee at 50 yards.
Another great pistol that will never be sold.

For somewhere around $1,100 you should be able to buy a Springfield Range Officer.
Nothing fancy but a good gun with adjustable sights.

G4C has a Dan Wesson 9mm right now for $1,799
 
I had a Springfield RO,chambered in 9mm.
It's not gonna be the tac driver you think it is, not like a Shadow 2 anyway.
 
The norincos are very good for the price if you're willing to put up with ok finish and can do some minor work to them yourself.
 
My norinco 1911 in .45 is one of my favorite pistol i own. It has the occasional malfunction with Rem UMC so this year i will reload to see if i can make her behave. But still for 350$ id buy it again. My advice if you go the norrinco way, buy real mag. The factory one that came with mine caused many malfunction. With proper colt mag im down to once or twice per 100 rounds.
 
I had a Springfield RO in 9mm. It was a nice gun. It was reliable and accurate. But it wasn't as nice as my SP-01 or Shadow 2. It ended up sitting in my safe so I sold it.
 
I have a Norc commander length 45acp. Nothing fancy, but has fibre optic front sight. I have several handguns, but this is my most fun. A 1911 in 45acp is very easy to shoot. Its a quasi- low recoil round. It is not a sharp recoil at all. More of a jump. Painless really. Dont bother with a 9mm 1911. A 45acp will be easy to shoot and very accurate.

I don’t have any high end 1911’s but one of the ones I have is a Shooters Arms in 9mm. I really enjoy shooting it as recoil is softer than 45 and is cheaper to shoot. It’s been very good and accurate as well. Far cry from my friends $4000.00 Ed Brown that’s about the nicest 1911 I’ve ever shot and rivals any of the expensive revolvers I have for accuracy.
For the money you want to spend there are some nice ones. But like others have said it’s not as accurate as some of the other 9 mm pistols.
If you do go with a 9mm you will probably end up with one in 45 though.

Shooter's Arms are only a little bit more and are good right out of the box.
 
Your first 1911 should be in .45 ACP, the way JMB intended. That being said, a lot of 9mm 1911's come up on the EE so just keep an eye out. There's a stainless Colt Competition 9mm on there right now for $1200. That would be my choice if I was in the market for one.

I love mine, and have had it for many years; no issues for me with the nork mags, and I am also running two Remington mags that work well.

What did you rent maybe start there..
 
My first handgun was a new Colt Gold Cup National Stainless in .45 which a still own. I'd say that I've shot-out this gun to the point of being a parts gun. I love the .45, but I would never get another stainless auto.

Stainless is the wrong material to use in a hard-working gun IMO. Great gun, sights and trigger, but the stainless metal is too soft and caused some galling in the metal of the groove channels of the slide, not to mention the slide is loose and actually may be cracked (can't tell because of all the galling and penning of the metal).

I don't know how many rounds and new springs I went through with that gun, but I'd say nearing 50K. So, while I love the .45 better than a 9mm, I'd recommend a carbon steel made gun over that of stainless if you intend to do a LOT of shooting.
 
For a 1911 in 9 mm, I think a Commander makes sense. Colt started these around 1950 with an aluminum frame. I've got the Ruger lightweight Commander in 9 mm and and the standard size 45. Zero issues with both shooting hand loads in 45 and bulk 9 mm.
 

There's nothing wrong with 9mm 1911. Even Jason Burton at Heirloom precision is building a lot more 1911's of all sizes in 9mm these days. Costs less to shoot, is accurate and you can get relatively flush 10 round Wilson Combat mags for government frame and 9 round mags for officer frames. (in old days it was 9 for govt and 8 for officers). With a 9mm, a steel frame will virtually last forever, and with regular recoil spring changes so should an alloy frame.

If you get an officer's frame 1911...CCO type, the .45 does have noticeably more recoil than 9mm. I do like the big holes .45 acp makes on paper.
