War Medals

Thought I would enlist the help of the milsurp forum for two different medals I have come to acquire.
Thought if you collect milsurp, you may have knowledge of memorabilia as well.
They are not war medals per say and have not had much luck finding any information.

The one has the queen atop of a lion and on the back reads;

A.D.G.B
Command
Tug-Of War
110 Stone
Boscombe Down
A.C.2 Gray
1935

This medal comes in a case that says Royal Tournament.

It does not have hallmarks, however is is tarnished like silver and believe it to be silver.

The one on the left is from some tournament, with a picture of a gent in tug of war. The back reads;

Boscombe Down
Inter-Flight
Tug-of-War
Winners
1934

There are also hallmarks which leads me to assume it is silver as well.


Any information as to origin, if they are collectible or their value is greatly appreciated.

They look like station awards for atheltic competitions.

Air Defence of Great Britain Command (the predecessor of Fighter, Bomber , Coastal and Training Commands)
Tug of War
110 stone = 1540lbs
Boscombe Down is a Royal Air Force station
AC2 = Aircraftsman 2nd Class (Gray)

So it looks like AC2 Gray won the tug of war competion by pulling 1540lbs (perhaps) at Boscombe Down which was under ADGB Command in 1935.

As for the inter-flight competition, a flight is just an air force term for platoon or a small section. So amongst the sub-units at Boscombe Down in 1934, this particular award was given to the winners of the tug of war.

As for value, I won't hazard a guess. I suppose there is niche market for such things but they certainly aren't war-related or bravery/valour awards of any nature. They may be of some interest to AC2 Gray's family (if you were able to locate them), otherwise ebay might provide a market with RAF memorabelia collectors.

The 110 stone would be refering to the weight class of the tug of war team in that the combined weight of the teams members pulling on the rope could not exceed 110 stone.I think there would only be 8 or maybe 10 pullers on the rope pulling against another team with same amount of pullers.

Tug o war is a great team building sport,right up there with Thugby.
I have a couple of those type of medals from my misspent youth in the Army,it is, or was, a very popular sport in the British forces.

Hmm, just a thought, If the case said Royal Tournament could it be the one that was held in London for many years UNTIL "princess Tony Blair " cancelled it?

Have attended two of those. Loved the Musical Ride by the RHA.
