Warm Greetings from South Africa

Works out?

Welcome Martin, I was in South Arfica for a month 2 years ago.....beautiful country, I hope everything works out over there!

Yes, it is a beautiful country, thanks. I've only been here 25 years myself, had to get away from the 'cradle to grave' mentality that was crumbling to pieces around me following my discharge from the Navy into civvy street.

Hopefully you had a pleasant visit and experienced no 'events' other than the ones you read about in the paper or on TV. Fact is violent crime here has become so perrenial thats become mundane except for the really gruesome stuff the tabloids love to cover.

Being hands-on involved in Community Crime-prevention means I probably know more about whats going on than most would like to but thats their choice I guess, ignorance only being bliss to some.

The trick of course is to focus on the positive if possible, although trying to explain to a weeping eighty-year-old why the burglars has to pour scalding water on his wifes face to get him or her to give them the safe keys is not a regular occurence, it certainly gives one clarity in who and what exactly we're dealing with here, basically, demented savages.

We flew in and out of CapeTown and went as far east as Jeffrey's Bay to do some surfing.
Great trip and no problems, but we weren't out partying much at night and kept it pretty mellow traveling in a rented car and staying at backpackers lodges.
It really blew me away how many different Africans live in South Africa and the tension and hostility that exists among the blacks from different parts of Africa! The people living in the townships really do exist in a different world and it's hard to say if they are compatible with a democratically elected govt....
Good Luck!

Good luck Martin! Not that reading Wilbur Smith books makes me an expert on South Africa but i can definatly say i know more about the place than most 23 year old Canadian males. I think i'll join your forum so i can get to know more about your country. I've always wanted to go there but i heard that it's not really all that welcoming anymore. What i heard is all misinformation, i hope. Anyway, keep fighting the good fight.
