Warmest baselayer and where to get a pair

I got a pair of smartwool base layer long johns for Christmas and they're far and away the best I've ever worn. The bonus is that they'r elong in the legs and high in the waist. This eliminates them pulling out of your socks or your shirt from coming untucked. I'm 6'5" and the legs are plenty long that they will never pull out of my socks and the waistband in the back is high enough that my shirt can't pull out of it, even when I'm bending over.

I've also got a pair of Cabela's heavy weight fleece long underwear that are extremely warm. I wore both the Cabela's and Smartwool (I probably wore the Smartwool more because they are lighter weight and not as hot while sitting in the office) this winter and it was -30 or colder from the beginning of November until 2 weeks ago.
 
I use Wind River/Misty Mountain fleece. It's soft, quiet, warm, breaths and dries fast if sweated-up or wet. Marks Work Warehouse sells them.
 
there is only one way to stay warm....3 layers. DRY skin is warm skin (and wet skin is cold skin)
Layer 1 against your skin is polypropylene or some other kind of wicking layer that wicks moisture away from your skin (skin stays dry)
Layer 2 is for warmth - Ulfrotte (Swedish underwear) made from Merino wool. Google it. Only place I know that sells it is Angies Outdoor store in Barrie Ontario (they have a website) It is expensive but VERY warm
Layer 3 is a shell that keeps wind and water out - GORETEX works great

Use the 3 layer system with Heavy weight Ulfrotte underwear and you will be warm (it is sold in 3 weights)
 
I have an issue with hyperhydrosis, and sweat like no other. Starting warm in winter without being wet is something i have had an issue with over the last 5 or so years. The best thing I have found is merino wool. Keeps you dry and warm, even if it is soaked. It tends to get pretty heavy when wet, but not like old style sheep's wool. I also use dry wear undershirts if I know I will be working up any sort of sweat.

I never heard of the Ulfrotte brand but will try it on your recommendation. The next time i'm in Barrie, I will look up Angies store.

I work in the communications field and climb towers in temps as low as -50. I wear either the Helly Hanson gear or I have recently switched to the Columbia omniheat. Both brands come in different weights but as far as mobility is concerned I would go with the omniheat as it is thinner and does as well if not better then the more expensive helly gear
 
Hands down, Merino Wool is the best product on the market. Ive worn one set for week long hiking hunts in the Mountains and it doesnt stink at the end. Polypro would normally walk away by itself after that many uses. My poly only gets used for walks in the neighbour hood now. Try a pair of socks and wear them for a few days and see what you think. I never wash my wool after each use!

Icebreker, Smartwool, and Ibex are all good. Many places sell them, or try online at Valhalla Pure Outfitters (Canadian Company).
