I just tried out my new Warne Maxima QD rings.

They're mounted on a ZKK600 30-06 with a B&L 3200 Elite.

I sighted in with factory 180 gr Winchester powerpoints.

Shot a 1" group dead on at 100 yards.

Took the scope/rings off shot a group with the iron, let the barrel cool down for 20 minutes.

Re-mounted the scope/rings and shot another group with a cold barrel.

Another 1" group but this time 2" lower and 2.5" right of the first group that was dead on.

I waited 15 minutes and shot another group in the same low/right position.

Is this amount of shift in POI normal for QD rings?

Am I expecting too much of these rings?

I have not yet loctited the rings, I'll do all the screws and try it again next weekend.

I am a big fan of EAW's quick-detach mounts. The cost is substantial, but they are head and shoulders above the rest, IMO. I had them on a Remington Custom Safari in .416RM. I got them after I tried a set of Leupold quick detach mounts on a Remington 700 BDL in .338 WM. I would not waste my money on those again.

If you can afford to, I suggest an upgrade.

I have a set Of Maxima Rings on my Tikka. Tried to remove them once and point of impact changed about 1 inch to the left. That seems acceptable to me.

I believe you would have to make sure the tension you put on the locking screws is the same when you put the rings back on... if you are looking for a similar point of impact

Not answering your question exactly about the Warnes, but Leupold QR post-type quick detachable rings do not move POI. At least the 4 sets I have tested have not.

I have tried them on rifles that shoot comfortably under just an inch, at least at this level of accuracy any POI movement is not discernable.

Not a bad price either.

My problem was that the release knobs would tighten with recoil. Eventually I had to use a wooden dowel as leverage. The tightening would be noticeable after ~10-15 rounds.

Warne = the rings people buy when they can't get Talleys. 'nuff said.

FWIW, I use the EAW's too, but only on Mauser actions :) It's a zen thing...

You're absolutely right, which is exactly what I want. But a leatherman or similar makes short work of it. I still use them on my 8-pound 358 Norma, and they work perfectly there.

Here's my best guess:

You probably tightened the rings AFTER you installed the bases on the rifle so that you could adjust for eye relief, etc.

Problem is that the rings need to be tight on the scope BEFORE you tighten the QD arms or POI will shift forst time you remove the scope.

I bet if you tighten everything down now and then re-zero, POI won;t shift around next time. Just my humble opinion ;)

I'm confused here Rick. Why would you want this? With the EAW's gentle finger pressure is all you ever need, no matter how many rounds you put through it.

For me, the only reason to take a scope off is to swap out a scope, or to take the scope off a rifle when crawling up a steep cliff and having the scope in a backpack, or stuffing the rifle in a tight spot in a bush place or boat or what have you. Taking the scope off is not something we do a lot. When recoil tightens a scope in place, I know it's not coming off or going to be loose thus adversely affecting POI.

Besides, all it takes to loosen the "over-tightened" QR's is a push with a thumb like you mean it. It doesn't take a sledgehammer to loosen them.

I have minimal personal experience with the European types, but am completely satisfied with the QR's. The post-type arrangement is brutally strong, and I know from long experience I can trust them. Cheap as well.

Range report.

I loctited all of the screws in the Maxima's and cleaned the bore.

Tried her out this weekend and the setup hold its zero.

I am a happy camper! Thanks for all of the advice.
