*** Warning *** Imperial Shot shells

I bought a couple of packs of Imperial Shot Shells at CT got em home a few days ago and this morning was loading up my ammo box when I found 1 of the new boxes of Imperial from CT was half pellets in an Imperial blue jacket and the other half were slugs in a red jacket. The really odd part is the slugs were Federal? I don't know who makes these Imperial shells a quick google search came up empty. I'm not sure if this was a screw up from factory (which I doubt) or a screw up where someone returned a box to CT and put 2 different kinds of 12 ga shells in the same package before they returned it (seems more likely). I'd like some feedback here if anyone knows who I should get a hold of as far as manufacturers to let them know about this (lot number ect...)?

I will call that CT store and let them know but just a warning to make sure you check your ammo carefully. Depending on the choke/barrel there is a strong possibility of damage to the gun, injury or even worse?? This morning I was a little groggy and just thought it was a screw up but the more I think about it the more I realize someone could have been really badly hurt or worse. Just a heads up to keep your eyes peeled for stuff like this.

That was my thought too. But I and others would be rather annoyed if I showed up for a bird hunt with what turned out to be a box half full of slugs. And in Ontario at least, slugs are actually illegal to have in the field if you don't also have a big game permit, and always when out of season.

I know you can but if the manufacturer says its not safe I wouldn't do it.

These chokes are recommended for slugs:
4 notches = Improved cylinder
5 notches = Cylinder


A cylinder choke is recommended for shooting rifled slugs in a smooth-bore barrel. Sabot slugs should only be shot through our fully-rifled slug barrels.


It is not safe to shoot slugs through chokes tighter than those listed here.
 
I had a box of 20GA winchester that I got from my local CT and I found a few of the rounds had the crimps ripped wide open.. I thought it was really weird.
 
I had the opposite happen to me opened my pack of rifled slugs I bought from CT and it was #8 target inside. I have a feeling that someone who works there swapped them out & maybe that was the plan with yours but you bought the box before they where finished.

That is not a true quote at all. Down here in southern Ontario lots of us carry slugs to shoot at coyotes.

What if you're hunting coyotes? No big game license is required for coyotes
 
I will add that imperial shells are made by Challenger. And coincidently, a buddy of mine purchased a box of #7 steel Challenger shells from Sail for a dove hunt. To his surprise there were #8 lead shells mixed into the box. He didnt even realize that he was shooting lead until i picked up one of his hulls. He didnt notice because both shells use the same baby blue hulls. Good thing he didnt get searched by a CO

The risk has to do with either causing the choke to expand and seize in the barrel, or for it to blow out of the barrel and damage the threads. A fixed full choke is fine to shoot slugs through.
 
That sounds like a buying ammo at ct warning since federal certainly does not make the imperial shells.
Probably mixed up by the usual smart people they employ...

Nothing remotely similar to CIL of days gone by. Although my dad and I, GOD rest his soul, use to buy challengers by the case when thy came out to use up, on ducks, just for the hulls to reload, for ducks, lol. This was before non-toxic shot for migratory birds was enforced. #6 lead in about anything worked.
 
Some numbnutz probably was driving a forklift with a pallet of ammo on it out in the back. I bet $100 that he whacked a post and half the ammo went flying across the floor, with the big shotgun shell boxes popping open like a jack-in-the-box. THEN, because he was in a panic, grabbed handfuls of shells to fill all the boxes and that is where the variety packs come from.
Case solved. Onwards and upwards.

Cant return ammunition to CT. And it is safe to shoot rifled slugs through anything as tight as a full choke or looser.

FWIW I saw the Imperial shells at my CT too and picked up a box of #2 steel for fowling. Patterned nicely and knocked down a few birds too.

I'd call whoever made the Imperial shells by way of information on the box. Id guess it is Federal but the box I have says S.E.C.L Inc., St- Justine de Newton QC

Head scratcher for sure!

Edit: It was also interesting that there are only 20 shells in the box. Don't be fooled by the price like me! I will run them anyway because the price in comparable, the product is solid and they are Canadian. OH CANADA. I wish we had more Canadian made products...
