Alright, so I am a safe gun owner, handler, etc. I would in no way want to endager anyone or myself.

I shoot often enough, BUT I have never dealt with reloading or fiddling with ammo.....

My question is actually ammo related, but NOT shooting related.

My friend, she wants to make a "bullet" (what we call a round) necklace. She asked me if I could give her a dead/dummy round for that purpose.

My question is as follows: I have a a couple old 5.56 rounds in my ammo box, that I would not mind using for the purpose.

HOW would I go about emptying the round, and drilling it/etc, without causing any danger?

What is the safest way to "dummy" a live round?

Or is it too stupid?

Let me know please! I'd love to help her out!

I have done the same for a keychain.
Fire the round, then load a new projectile on fired brass.
The primer is now spent and there is no powder to ignite.

Or, Decap, load bullet, then fill the primer pocket with silver solder.
 
Do you have a reloading press? It's simply easy if you do.

1. Get a bullet puller and pull the bullets out.
2. Dunk the casings with live primers into water for a while to deactivate the primer.
3. Remove the primer with a decapping die in your press.
4. Put bullets into empty casings again using your press.

Done.

That said, I wouldn't want to wear hunks of lead around on my body. Lead is no good for humans... If you want to be healthy about it, look for 100% copper bullets. Far less toxic.
 
I took bullets (not the entire cartridge) and soldered a small ring to the base. Then I gold plated them. These look nice on a chain. The pictured ones have not been polished. The gold shines up nicely.

I made these years ago when gold was cheaper. I think the bullet looks better on a lady's chanin than a complete cartridge. You cna have one of these for $10.

I also have 6.5 gr match bullets that are nickle-plated. They have a hole drilled though them for a key-chain.

Ok.... now assuming I DON'T have ANY reloading equipment... hahaha

I figured pulling the bullet, emptying the contents and reloading would be best.

Option 2 would be to have a buddy that reloads, and just ask him to load me up a new round, with no powder and no primer. Just casing and bullet.
 
PM sent. I've got a random selection of ammo - can probably send you what you need without you having to buy tools or monkey around with it.
 
They're not that expensive and if you ever plan on reloading you'll definitely use it more than once. Maybe ask your friends or people at the range, someone is bound to have one that you can use.

You can try to pull the bullet with a vice or tools but you're going to ruin the bullet.

Yea, i wanted to avoid ruining the bullet, although I could polish it after..however I have a feeling the marks would be too deep to polish out :p
 
I had a 6BR dummy that I drilled and hung off my keyring. One of the ladies at the local paint store saw it and wanted it. I polished it up and gave it to her and she had "Your Name" engraved into the case. :D

Jeebus! It seems like the CGN forum is the ultimate example of "ask and you shall receive!"

I might just PM you re: one or two fo those calibers ;)
 
For anyone lacking a super friendly gun nut loading for you, there are two suggestions I could say.
If you have a bullet puller you can remove the projectile without damaging it... a soft cloth, pliers and patients might also get the bullet out with damaging it if you lack the proper tool. I wouldn't suggest using water... just chamber the primed case and fire it. Getting it in will be a bit tight... and it might come loose if you don't ctimp it slightly but the round will now be inert.
Or you could fire your round off and get ahold of a new projectile and seat it in the fired case. You will need to crimp it or it will fall out as the mouth of the case will be slightly flared from firing. Although finding the projectile to use might be tough as they normally are sold in smallest package of 100...
A friend with a press really does seem the way to go :)

What you said. I've never met a cheap method of pulling a bullet that didn't leave big gouges in it. Drop the 20$, get the puller. I mean, if you're going to get into reloading anyway...
