Got these club rifle(s) returned sometime ago with a non issue slip-on recoil butts.

You can see the mess. Will have to take my time getting it off. Can't use alcohol due to original shellac finish on stock.

I'm not saying those recoil pads have anything to do with my statement below, but,,,,,,,

A fellow that I know is in the rubber business. (International Buyer)

He is a Chemical and a Mechanical Engineer!

We have had several conversations about items made now, present day (market opened up with China) and things that where made long before hand.

Everything from hoses to rubber molded products.

His first words to me was, have you ever noticed a different smell when walking into Can-Tire from when you were younger.

As a matter of fact, Yes!

His reply, low grade rubber products from China.

He said that so many products in the early days from China where sold at a better quality than they actually were when the market opened up.

Many of the products now are just made on the cheap side and to look good.

You can buy good quality from China, but you will pay for it.

I have experienced this myself with many items over the last while.

Just not holding up to what they where supposed to be.

Good luck getting that dried mess off, but if anyone can, you will!

I sure wish you where closer, I would come over and help.

I used to shoot with the Swiss Rifle Club out of Winona Range in Ontario.

Now that I'm fresh retired, I should get back into it.

I loved every moment.

Good luck finding an electrical cord suitable for cold weather. :(

Here's what I would do. Sharpen some popsicle sticks and use them to remove as much as possible of the remaining rubber. Then use WD40 to remove the remaining residue. I've used WD40 successfully to remove a large variety of residues and material without damaging the underlying finish. BTW, it makes a super carbon remover from your rifle bores as well.

Hmmm, my Mas 36/51 is wearing one of the military issue rubber butt-pads. Has anyone seen this occur with those? Maybe I should keep it off when not in use.

I can't remember if the K31 has a steel or plastic buttplate. If steel, it's probably wise to remove it, as it could trap moisture.

Appreciate the offer. That's what our clubs are for, to help each other.

Was Adrian president when you were shooting at Winnowa? Did you ever go to Camp Borden with them or to the Kingston shoots?

aaaaarg, too many years ago to remember names, mid to late 1990s.

One fellow I remember from Burlington was into Ham radio. (who actually got me interested in Ham radio)

I only shot with the Swiss Club at Winona.

My Borden days where with the ORA, same era.

Yup, a guy I know pointed that out to me a while ago, he worked in the auto parts manufacturing industry. He said the fault is not with Chinese manufacturing, they can make quality parts same as anyone, the problem is the buyers. Manufacturers send their specs for widgets in to the Chinese factories saying we need 10,000 of these a month and we need them for 18 cents each, not a penny more.

Chinese manufacturers have become experts of making stuff on the cheap, because that's what the market is demanding.

They were forging quality metals (and had tons of other advances) when our European ancestors were still living in caves.
