Not a well known fact, but Hawaii is a top notch hunting destination. Scrambled up to 9000 feet and a bit more chasing sheep on Mauna Kea today, will do a write up on my site and more pics when back. Interesting going through the alpine, then above the treeline on a tropical island, and ultimately climbing to where vegetation ceases and it's cold. Hunting boar tomorrow in the jungle, ought to be good. And yes, my .375's here, only rifle I brought. Thought for a moment it might be feeling heavy while hiking today then reminded myself to buck up. ;) Above the clouds in the photo below, was raining on the way up, one way to improve the weather; go higher.

Hey there's worse here than I!

Black Sheep, accidentally introduced in the 1700's from sailing ships, it took to the high reaches of the volcano all too well. There are goats as well, many, many of them, also of the same origin, they call them "Ibex Goats" locally due to their very long, sweeping horns. The pigs apparently have been here for a couple thousand years and are referred to as "Polynesian Boar". The wingshooting here is mind boggling- and I didn't even bring my shotgun. Sigh... Next time.

I try, on my shift I work 6 months a year, but it's 24/7 and a long ways from home work in camp when onshift. It's actually tough to get the time from my wife even with a lot of time off, rightly so too on her part, as she runs the house / kids for half the year alone. Realistically, it's all thanks to my wife as she allows me to have the job that lets my hunts happen, and to have the time.

That is really cool. Thanks for posting. I look forward to the whole report. When you say you will post the report on "my site" is it this one or some other site?

Well, if you're feeling blue, I'm sure if you look around you'll find yourself some
nice Mauii Wauii.
Frick'in awesome to be on a hunt like that.

sounds awesome. I've poked around the wilder places of Maui and Kauai and was impressed by the number and variety of upland game birds. I've thought about combining a beach holiday (for the wife & kids) with a wingshooting holiday for me. Would love to hear more details on how you arranged the whole thing... what the requirements, expenses are, etc. Question, though...in most areas of most islands, the introduced sheep, goats, pigs are considered ecological pests, and the State agencies are trying to eradicate them from certain places. Is there a bag limit? Do locals take the meat if you shoot a bunch? The biologists I spoke to seemed like they'd be happy if you shot every pig you saw!

Well with any luck........errr.........unluck, this would be great in the thread, "Pictures Without The Kill".
Take lots of photos Ardent.
Aww, c'mon, just a little jealous pesster'in is all..............

Post more pics when you can.Your a lucky man to have a wife like her. You should have brought the family along and left them on the big island . Till you were finished.

They're here too enjoying the place. :)

Wally, hope you're not right but if that's the case already the best hunts I've never fired a shot on!

I went out with a pig guy yesterday, but you can self guide here, I tried for sheep that day on my own. Just get a license, study up on the game management areas, and have at it.
