Something very similar already exists in .177 cal. Unfortunately it's not a powderburner but shoots quite well up to 30 feet. And replicates the M712 (full auto C96) very well:

Copies and look a likes were made in China and Spain.

In Spain, Astra by ( Astra-Unceta y Cia ), ETAI / Royal MM31 (Model 1) and Azul by ( Beistegui Hermanos in Eibar ).

In the US, Federal Ordnance M713 and M714.
 
Mine's been very reliable with Fiocch ammo, although the bolt spring was worn out when I got it (to the point where if you pressed down the floorplate the bolt would just sort of stop on your finger) so I replaced that. Can't recall it ever jamming on me which is definitely something I can't say about my Luger. Not a very pleasant gun to shoot though!
