Was the Type 97 used in Vietnam?

I heard the Type 97 was handed out to an elite left handed communist faction during vietnam to face off against the American's fighting bears.

Is this true?
 
Yes, but not to the NVA and VC.
QBZ95 prototypes were field tested in Cambodia, Burma and Laos to elite Mao Loyalists to fight the remnants of the ROC/KMT army from Yunnan, who were fighting alongside with the Yanks.
