Was there an AK47 in .223? Was it officially imported into Canada ?

I know AKS made a 5.45x39 AK but I cannot find any info on a .223 AKS rifle? Does anyone have info on such an AKS in .223/ If you do post it her or PM me.

CanArm in Edmonton imported Chinese AKM (pressed steel receiver) pattern rifles in 5.56x45, (.223). Both rifle and LMG configurations were imported. These were among the first AK type rifles imported into Canada.
Subsequently, more .223 AKM type rifles were imported from China by Century Arms. These were of a different pattern than the CanArm rifles.
 
Does manufacturer matter in your search?

Chinese made examples in 223 are pretty common, I've seen them for sale both here on the EE and on canadian auctions.

Additionally, since NR Valmets exist in 223 there are a number of dressed up examples made out to look like an AK...

I’ve seen and held one of these. Was in a box well hidden in an attic of a house a friend of mine inherited.
 
I owned a polytech ak47 in 223 back in the late 1980's or early 1990's. It had the under folder "wire" stock and a folding bayonet, so yes they were around. Paid $700 at Lee's guns in Kamloops. It was cool, but couldn't hit the side of a barn so the novelty wore off and I traded it back to Lee at a loss of course.
 
All the info I can glean off of mine:
Model 84-S - 7
Norinco 5.56 x 45
Made in P R of China (All stamped pretty badly)

Serial # in low 300's

Mags are like hen's teeth for this model (the one in the middle)

Norinco imported a number of 84S Rifles in the 1980's...fixed wood,side folder,and underfolders..there was also a small batch of RPK's in 5.56, not sure if they were Norinco or Polytech...We also had the Galil ARM and a few Valmet rifles...
 
Yes, no, to the best of my knowledge.

Allowing you to have any AK, in any calibre, would not fit the narrative.
 
I had a fixed stock 84S for a bunch of years. There was nothing special about it. It wasn't overly accurate and it suffered feeding failures at a rate one didn't expect from an AK pattern rifle. I sold it off many years ago and don't miss it one bit.
 
Polytech Type 56. Stamped AKM in .223 / 5.56 some fixed (56-1) , some under folders (56-?). They were imported into Canada in the late 80’s and ended up prohib as converted autos.
 
I had one, the ejection was......very vigorous, much more so than even the 7.62x39 which was fairly impressive. In a war you could have killed the guy in front of you and wound the one beside you at the same time. The side folder was the one to have.
 
There are many Norinco 223 AKs in Canada under OIC now. They are good examples of earlier “typical” Chinese quality. Nothing to write home about.
