Was this K98k originally issued to the SS?

"They" say that no prefix BNZ's were issued to the SS. This is a decent (for an RC) example of a K98k that is widely mismatched.

Thanks, but I did Google this first and saw those and other similar threads on the topic.

All I "learned" was that there's lots of disagreement on the subject (and fights, naturally), and lots of fakes.

I bought this in 2007 and chose it because it had nice markings and bore. It was not peddled as an "SS" rifle and hence I won't be offended if I find out it isn't ex-SS, much less Himmler's personal weapon.

We know that the SS used M98 Mausers, and hence I would have thought that there'd at least be agreement that:

1. you can't tell because they just used what the Heer used; or
2. they only used <maker> and/or <years> and/or <serial range> and/or <markings present> and/or <markings absent).

My understanding is that original made for the SS guns didn't have WaA proofs which yours does. So unless it was diverted later it likely wasn't originally an SS rifle. I'll put a picture up later of the markings on mine...

Pretty much with anything Army didn't want. Vz24s had an advantage of being in 7.92mm calibre. They also used ZB-26s (daddy of Bren) and ZB-53s.

Then they got to use russian SVTs and PPShs semi-officially. Not entirely sure how they got ammo for those, but they also ran 2 battalions of captured T-34s, so I guess they had some stockpiles.

The rifle posted was never an SS issued rifle. It could have been given to anyone but was not made specifically for the SS. The only but for SS production guns are 43/44 dated.

sszza4 and sszza2 depot builds (generally built on bnz43 receivers, but sometimes bnz42/gew/vz24 etc receivers were used)

Steyr SS contracts built on bnz43/4/44 receivers (most were actually built in ‘44)

yes on the right side partly under the stock your have to remove the stock to see it fully. Also mine has a very low 3 digit serial number. I do Have some Pic's will see if I can post them tomorrow as I'm off to bed now have to work in the morning.

Yes, it's an old import stamp - I believe from the US. I have seen two K98s with it.
