Was this K98k originally issued to the SS?

That rifle looks good to me, about as interesting as a RC gets. Most of the early rebuilds were stamped very low on the barrel and are often times completely covered by the stock, so you got lucky on this one. I wish I still had one.
 
Early war photos show the SS using Czech equipment as mentioned in BlackVoids post ( #9 ).

The VZ24s and the ZB26s used the German WW1 "s" 150 grain cartridge.

The older versions of W.H. Smiths, " Small Arms of the World ", has the ballistic tables for the VZ24 and it's cartridge.
