watch this space * rut commenced

Do you folks still have a rabbit issue like the '80's?
Beautiful pics please keep them coming.
An australian woman's accent is nigh on the ###iest on the planet, lord bless you folks :)

mate the rabbits got poisioned an calicy virus got a lot, the last 5 years there has been a big boom in rabbit sightings up in the bush aswell as on farms, certainly back in good numbers but not problematic as back in the day

funny you say that, I love a girl from Vernon, I rekon the Canadian sheilas sound drop dead ###y, ive seen her a couple times, in Canada an in aus but ya never know what the future holds ay

hahaha wishful thinking *

Oh I see! ever shoot a kangaroo?? LOL
And to think I'm gonna be waiting for what seems like forever just to hunt some moose and bears.
You lucky bugger...

plenty of roos in the younger days with a 222, now days not at all, farmers get tags to cull them from private land if numbers are up.

Well guys had some Success on the fringes this morning.

I couldn't sleep all night an got up at 5 an drove off to the block in the pre dawn morning I sat an glassed in an out of the car as it was a bit chilly (cool), as light started to slowly creep in I watched some black shapes over the dam about 400 away, they were racin around an I was unable to identify what they were exactly as I was 10 minutes early according to the light.

I stalked up a gulley an back out then spied a lone Red hind feeding up in the back corner, then 3, 4 ,5 Red deer, you beauty... I trekked up a ridge an should of poppe up 100m off them but instead they moved further back toward the bush line..typical :)
I popped out 200m or so from the hind, she was feeding with the calf an the stags/hinds were closer to the cover!

In an attempt to see what animals were around I failed to Range in a state of buck fever I guess (red deer rookie) once I noticed antlers I got camera for quick pics an clip, binos to have a bit of a look before they spooked, I decided if I don't the neighbouring block will an on that note I sent a 130gr Corelokt flying straight over the Stags back!!! (Story of my life on Red stags)

luckily it puffed up some dust an the Mob literally ran across of me an up toward another Ridge, I'd given some lead an sent 1 mid flight before calming as they slowed for the ridge and as it was directly away from me, I was able to put one in the Lungs from slightly above which anchored and soon killed the Stag!

I gathered my empty shells, backpack an slid under the fence an trekked over to a Unlucky Red Stag.

Its been 3 years since I shot my 1st Red deer, a 10 point young stag, ive chased them reasonably hard since, missed a lot an been bluffed in close quarters, ive shot button Reds, a small 4x5 and now this Good one.

The farmer on the block gets the ####s sometimes as I let too many deer walk, my mentality is changing for him as it is hes property, so I look forward to the Roar in the coming weeks, try find a Grand Daddy!!!

Im stoked!

Cheers

Impressive deer you got m8 but the most impressive part of those pictures is the beard! Redneck approved, my friend. Redneck approved.

Couple of things fell in place this year so far, one being my old man has property in another state and its full of deer..

so ive been scouting it an recently hunting it hard as the rut has commenced for Fallow deer over there.

I have more scenic photos I will post up after the rut but for now here is a couple of liveys and a couple of bucks which show Cleft palms or malformations , I plan on keeping the mature heads aroun even if Cleft for now as I think the trait is very strong through the herd, an with cameras will see what potential is around, in the mean time most young bucks from button to 'stick form' (like black buck) will have to tread very careful.

hope yas enjoy, all have been shot with the .270win Rem700 and 130gr corelokt reloads.

Its a Piece of piss to come hunt here, That's why I got my hopes up thinking Canada might be similar, or have loop holes... but NO

You can hunt with me very easily, there is Visitor permits for Foreigners now incl Rifle, an Deer permits.... Depending on State there is minor differences in requirements.

*No tag for each Animal- in aus its a general tag, many animals on one permit , generally for 12 months... some species have Seasons in some states.

OI whos baggin me .270 :D:D:D:D

That's a heck of a good sized deer. Where abouts in Au are you?
Have a Brother & Sister in SA(Adelaide) for many years.

This always happens to me!

anyway the morning was a frusterating hunt in some Fallow country, loggers interrupting some vocal deer out yonder and pushing the does into the fringe early, I had just stepped out of the ute when it all stopped... standard.

pushed on an bumped a mob an a spiker at 20m, thought it a waste to let an Accubond rip thru the thing an continue on reasonably undamaged so I didn't shoot anything.. an seen no bucks.

So after a nap around midday I got keen at 3 an headed up to a block of SF but us private access for ease of access, at the 2nd gate I see a spikey go thru the rocky knob at 500m away, I glassed quickly and got in the ute an headed up to the final gate, was planning to park before it and walk in when as I slowed the ute, a buck sprung up from the bush an tripped over a couple times an pissed off pretty quickly!! haha

went thru the gate after the commotion and let things settle for 20 minutes before donning the pack an setting off, within 50m I pushed off a deer so I thought righto lets take it back to the old school...

I planned a route from where I was toward an thru a Wallow into a open patch before I would call it a day, Walk em up style!

I snuck along for quite a while, wallabys, roos the standard, nearing the wallow , wind in my face an slight rustle of the trees , everything just felt right. so keeping that in mind I tip toed up the final depression full alert.

low an behold a "grey ghost" silhouette behind a gum tree an dead fall, very slowly lifted the Wedgetails and sure as #### its a Sambar deer, heavy chest an neck looking, no idea of headgear due to big gum.. in this moment I always have a drama of deciding to undon pack grab Camera, sit down an watch it, or shoot it.

Instinct kicked in, along with buck Fever, as experience tells me to Shoot first and Ask later when it comes to Sambar staning with heads behind trees...

So on that note, I flicked the safety off as I sat on my ass with rifle on knee and well... That Accubond hit home and the Stag rared an leapt forward, ran off and I lit a cigarette an wondered.... Just what was that thing.

200m blood trail later and heres what I found

IMG_20150409_200536.jpg

now reference to Grey Ghost is typically incorrect, although the Stag do get grey depending on the dirt around. typically a brown ghost.

this is off a property where the owner would like the deer shot on sight.

willingly apply

250m shot with a 150gr accubond, first shot at neck I missed as it sat, it got up an tooka few steps and I let a BT energetics 168gr with a backline hold do its thing and I had the buck on the grass.

Cheers
