Watched "The Guns of Navarone" Tonight

The Lighthorseman,
The Dam Busters,
Sink The Bismark,
The Enemy Below,
Run silient, Run Deep,
San Diementro, London.

And many more!

I remember watching Tora Tora Tora in the theatre when it first came out. after the attack, you could have heard a pin drop in the theatre. Dead silence.:(

On another note, Just loved "The Wind and the Lion." Imperialism at its finest! :D

Time for another poem

EVERY MAN SHOULD HAVE A GUN

So I sit and write and ponder
While the house is deaf and dumb
Seeing visions over yonder
Of the war I know must come
In the corner, not a vision
But a sign of coming days
Stands a box of ammunition
And a rifle in green baize
And in this, the living present
Let the word be through the land
Every tradesman, clerk, and peasent
should have these two things at hand
No, no ranting song is needed
And no meeting, flag or fuss
In the future still unheeded
Shall the spirit come to us.
Without feathers drum or riot
On the day that is to be
We shall march down very quiet
To our stations by the sea
While the bitter parties,
Stifle every voice that warns of war
Every man should have a rifle
And cartridges in store.

Henry Lawson, 1907

Not trying to thread jack but when the 2 lone P40s greased those Japanese Zeros & torpedo bombers, the entire audience around me clapped & cheered. Unlike most modern wars which are murky in nature, WW2 was a clear battle between good and evil.

you know a " A Bridge Too Far" is pretty good even by today's standards I think. I don't even mind Ryan O'Neil in it, it's GENE HACKMAN AS THE POLISH PARATROOPER THAT'S BAD CASTING WRITTEN ALL OVER IT !!

Devil's Brigade is PURE fiction !! The Canadians in the movie either come across as a). more British than Churchill ( Richard Dawson in a kilt ?!? ) or b). WAY TOO spit and polish ! I have heard that Speilberg wants to make a mini series about the REAL 1st Special Service Force. Hope it happens !

Devil's Brigade is a great movie BUT it has a lot of inaccurate stuff :

The maps on the wall all show post war boundaries

The leather gear used by the Brigade in the film (boots, pistol holsters, etc.) is black; black leather gear wasn't adopted by the US Army until the late 1950s.

The Canadian flag shown in the ceremony near the end of the film wasn't adopted until 1964. At the time depicted in the movie, Canada still used a "modified Union Jack" type of flag called the Red Ensign.

All of the American officers, when wearing neckties are wearing Army Green neckties. They should be wearing khaki ties. Army Green did not come along until well after WW II. The enlisted men are all wearing the proper ties.

JUST TO NAME A FEW !!!!

Force 10 from navarone was the second movie from guns of navarone.

In the movie, the object was to blow up a bridge. However they could not so they blew a dam upstream from the bridge. They went inside and placed the explosives .The force of the water took out the bridge to complete the mission.

As for another good old war movie, I enjoyed attack force Z . The setting is in Jap controlled jungle and envolves a British commando unit . Also can not forget the battle of the bulge and the longest day.

"The Cockleshell Heros".

True story of a special group who were trained to take kayaks into a french harbour and blow up with limpid mines the cargo ships. Three were captured and shot. Two got away.

Also the story of the raid on St, Nazrine. The idea was to ram a old destroyer in the dry dock and blow it up, destroying the dock. Another true story.

Where did the men who would undertake such mission's go?

Big Daddy Mac, read "A Perfect Hell" by John Nadler.
The movie does take some liberties but the basic story until they get to Italy is pretty close re: the kilts/bar fights/training etc.

another vote for "a bridge too far" i stayed after work with a patient at the hospital and watched this movie until almost 3 in the morning. very entertaining...the bar fight in "the devils brigade" was great fun to watch but the production value of the movie left something to be desired...

Donny; read " Once Upon a wartime; A Canadian who survived the Devil's Brigade" by Peter Cottington , " Black Devil Brigade" by Joseph A Springer. Both are excellent books. I had a cousin who was in the 1st Special Service Force aka The Devil's Brigade and this guy could give you reams of things wrong with the movie !

My dad was in the RCAF for close to 35 years , and flew during both WWII and Korea, and according to him the BEST war movie he ever saw that showed what inside a plane was like in 1943 was "Memphis belle".

If you are a Band of Brothers fan read " Parachute Infantry " by David Webster ( yes, the guy who was one of the men portrayed in the series)and " Beyond Band of Brothers: the war time memoirs of Major #### Winters" by Maj. #### Winters.

How about Sven Hassel's Wheels of terror (misfit brigade)
not a bad war movie about a penal batalion
but my all time fave has to be Full Metal Jacket.
My wife a former pinko liberal loves it , she likes to shoot now too.
and john Wayn at his best (well ok not quite ) the Longest day

Force 10

"Force 10 from Navarone" - they blow up a bridge this time, not a naval gun emplacement.

Yeah that was a good flick too! Filmed in yugoslavia in the sixties. In 2000 on my Bosnian tour, me and the sarge got a little lost while driving on the Croatian side of the border. We ended up driving right past the bridge that was in the movie.... pretty neat. That part of the world is very rugged mountaineous ground.
