Wasn't it a dam? If not, in what movie did they blow up a dam from the inside?

Well technically yes. They blew up the Dam with minimal charges enough to weaken it to fail. This resulted in the force of the flooding water to topple the bridge if I remember it correctly.:D

Devil's Brigade is a great movie BUT it has a lot of inaccurate stuff :

The maps on the wall all show post war boundaries

The leather gear used by the Brigade in the film (boots, pistol holsters, etc.) is black; black leather gear wasn't adopted by the US Army until the late 1950s.

The Canadian flag shown in the ceremony near the end of the film wasn't adopted until 1964. At the time depicted in the movie, Canada still used a "modified Union Jack" type of flag called the Red Ensign.

All of the American officers, when wearing neckties are wearing Army Green neckties. They should be wearing khaki ties. Army Green did not come along until well after WW II. The enlisted men are all wearing the proper ties.

JUST TO NAME A FEW !!!!

But when Sgt O'Rielly from the PPCLI came into the mess and kicked some ass, I think his uniform was period correct. and he seemed to portray an accurate account of an Infantry Senior NCO.:canadaFlag:

I've always enjoyed the WWII fictions (later movies) authored by Alistair Maclean.

Some of the other books (different authors) made into movies like Cross of Iron or movies Stalingrad, Das Boot etc I wouldn't mind watching again.

Das Boot is probably my favorite, with Navarone a close 2nd. I haven't even seen Cross of Iron yet!:slap:

How about Sven Hassel's Wheels of terror (misfit brigade)
not a bad war movie about a penal batalion
but my all time fave has to be Full Metal Jacket.
My wife a former pinko liberal loves it , she likes to shoot now too.
and john Wayn at his best (well ok not quite ) the Longest day
I have read most of Sven Hassel's book.

His first book, "The Legion of the Damned" was a relevation to me at the time. To look at it from the germans point of view was most interesting.

The original is the one to watch
Great movie

Force 10 from navarone was the second movie from guns of navarone.

In the movie, the object was to blow up a bridge. However they could not so they blew a dam upstream from the bridge. They went inside and placed the explosives .The force of the water took out the bridge to complete the mission.

As for another good old war movie, I enjoyed attack force Z . The setting is in Jap controlled jungle and envolves a British commando unit . Also can not forget the battle of the bulge and the longest day.

Way back when my hometown had a movie theatre and the Battle of the Bulge was just released and was playing, one of the local veterans who had been in the battle was asked "are you going to see the movie, Battle of the Bulge?", His reply, "No, I've seen the play."

I like that!

Capt. Keith Mallory Played by Gregory Peck, notice the totally incorrect officer belt buckle.

Good movie though.

Got a question about SNIPER 2, Tom Beringer. The movie kinda sucked but I watched some of it anyway on the movie channel yesterday. But remember the scene where he and the chick go to grampas secret WWII weapons room and he picks up what looks like a Mosin, and he calls it a German K something, was that rifle a Russian Mosin or was it actually a German Mauser.. Love picking that kind of stuff out..

Anyone ever seen the film Stalingrad? I caught it once or twice on TV but have been unable to locate the DVD. I might just mail order it. It shows the utter disintegration of the 6th army as they are encircled and retreat in the brutal Russian winter.

It is the first movie I've seen starring Thomas Kretschmann, who has been in lots of German and English films. (Downfall (Der Untergang), King Kong, The Pianist)

Only bits and pieces of it too. I actually was researching the movie on the net last wk-end.

I found out that there are two different productions. the 1994 something movie and a very well designed and detailed three part documentry produced in 2003.

According to the net Rogers stocks both for rental. But after checking two local outlets, they only had the documentry. I watched that over the week end. They interview actual vets and it is dubbed in English. So you get the real story from these guys. Both Germans and Russians.

Plus lots of actual war time footage.

But the movie which I am trying to get is supposed to be very good also.

I heard about that but I never bothered to watch the movie as the first one was such crap!

If you want to have fun picking stuff out, watch "The Blue Max"
They used the Irish Army for BOTH sides, the only difference was that the ones playing the bad guys wore different helmets. The rest of the kit was the SAME. And then that "experimental" german fighter was a 1930's FRENCH Morane.;)

The German army with No.4 Lee Enfields.....!!

I loved Tak guk gi it was an amazing film and showed a totally different perspective from MASH which is how most people think of the korean war.

Just watched "The Good German" and it was awful. A horrible Casablanca rip off with modern hollywood morality preachiness.

The name escapes me but it was a famous black and white movie about the french army in WW1 and a corrupt incompetent general excutes a bunch of rank and file to cover up his cowardice. It might be called "alls quiet on the western front" but I could be wrong.

You are thinking of "Paths Of Glory" and it starred Kirk Douglas. The 'French' solders were are germans and the film was made in Germany. It was supposed to be made in france but one the french read the script, the refused permission for the filming!
Very good film.
