Taking the ATV in to the "moose camp" for the deer hunt.
Our hunt is late this year, starting next weekend. Second week could be frosty. I got 6" one year and had to pull the plug. Winched four times on the way out. ATV's and snow are not great companions. This year I have a set of chains.
Our trail is not too bad when it's dry. When it's wet it gets nasty, and when it snows it's a right bastard.
Steep hills you can't get a run at, bare rock and moss, creeks, mud, and just plain rough ground/roots to drive over.
I hunt alone second week, but I have friends at another camp half way out. Assuming they don't pull the plug themselves like they did last time.

I have the option of waiting out the snow, if I get a favorable long range, but of course that's iffy at best, as walking out with gear would not be nice. Weather forecasting, anything beyond 48hrs is a guess IMO.

So, how adventurous is your hunt?
Hunt from home? Or do you go ... out there... ??

There was a time I would wait for the snow to fly this time of year...
Especially the week of October 31 when the season was about to close in Region 8-08 here in BC.
The big boys would be out and about and tracking was as much fun as the shooting.
Cheeky buggahs would walk on either side of the truck in the night, just inches from the side of the box too.
Another fun in the snow activity.

My old camp, we had deer do that, where we parked to go into the bush. We'd come out to go back to camp, and find tracks around the truck.
I love a tracking snow, because I will stalk deer. I will track them quietly trying to get a look. It's not terribly efficient, but it's exciting. Deer explode from the bush at close range, or, you get to see/shoot. It's up to your skill level, and the surrounding conditions. Crunchy snow obviously makes this impossible, but wet snow can be your friend, other than getting soaked.
