Water damaged ammo: safe to shoot?

Many years ago, I was requested by the RCMP to do an inspection on a motor vehicle that had been
submerged in a body of water for a couple of days. The diver was deceased in the vehicle, thus the
mechanical inspection order.

While going through it [and not finding any mechanical defects] I found a well soaked box of 30-30
ammunition in the glove box. In speaking to the family member who came to recover the vehicle from
the shop, I showed him the box of ammo. His response: "It's probably no good, just discard it" I, of
course, did not discard it, but took it home.

A couple of weeks later when I had some spare time, I pulled the bullets from 2 rounds, expecting to
see evidence of moisture entering the rounds. No such evidence was apparent, so I shot the remaining
rounds out of my own 30-30. They all fired just fine.

I think loaded rifle/pistol ammo is more resistant to the egress of water than we may think. Dave.

I can recall years ago while deer hunting I found a 3006 shell on this ridge. it must have been there many years. in the sun rain snow etc. I gave it to my friend to shoot thru his rifle. it shot just fine.
