I'm about to test one or two of those 120gr sierras into the Water jugs, I'm wondering whats the better range distance to do this test?
stock standard 100ms?

also how many 1ltr milk jugs do you think I should line up to be sure to catch the pill?

will proberly shoot a 139 hornady boat tail into it aswell.. I have a funny feeling things could be close :D

Not to change the subject from water to dirt testing "BUT".................

Years ago when shooting at our range and out of curiosity I dug out my bullets out of the dirt berm. What I found out even to this day amazes me, the Hornady interlock bullets held together like a Nosler partition. The Sierras and Speer bullets would be pulled away or sucked from the copper jacket and even completely seperate. Meaning finding the outer copper jacket and lead core at different depths of the hole in the berm.

Bottom line, the Hornady interlock were cheaper than Nosler partitions and all I used for hunting were Hornady interlocks. I even shot 30-30 170 grain interlock bullets in my 30-06 at approximately 2,500 -2,600 fps and they held together hunting deer in the woods of Pennsylvania. So forget the water jugs and just buy the Hornady interlocks that hold together even when shot into the dirt berm.

P.S. If your Australian game is tougher than dirt then just get a bigger gun, and save the water for all the fires you have down under.

Also I have been told that if you dip your bullets in Vegemite the bullets will kill anything, even killer marsupials. :evil:

I have about 200 from the dirt , throw most away but get a shovel in a wheel barrow an water down the dirt from the backstop,.... slowly washes the dirt away an you are left with.... projies.
totally depends on your "dirt", I know dirt an it comes in many more variations than water LOL

I did the water jug thing with whole bunch of cartridges (223, 260, 7-08, 308, 300wm, 325wsm) - including 7-08. Mine stopped in jug 4 at 100yds, as did most other calibers. 260 140gr GK was the only one that went into Jug #5. 223 went into jug 2, the rest into jug 4, 260 into 5.
Its a very quick way to blow up 25 or so jugs...I have since switched to freezer ziplock bags filled with water
If you have access to a large sheet or tarp, put it down first - makes it easy to find the bullets.

my mother works in the bakery, so they go thru a ridiculous amount of 1ltr milk a day, something like close to 20! my supply is goood haha!

ill come back here an note what I found in relation to your tests.

I did just ask here because I knew a few of yas have done it before!

did u set any up on the side incase they kicked out to one side? or they drive pretty straight?

I am not sure you will be able to keep the bullet in a row of 1 liter containers. I think the people above are referring to larger containers. I have used gallon jugs and the bullets/jugs tend to wander a bit.

1l milk jug ... you will need a lot ... we tested and will continue with the 4 l something and it can take around 9 of them ... so at least 36 for a shot.

you can check at shorter distance and longer depending on what you want to know on bullet.

if you intend to test some the protocol should be the same then you get a record on how the bullet behave ...
 
If you need a bunch of 4L jug, go to the nearest gas station and ask for their empty windshield washer jugs. This time of the year they'll be happy to hand hundreds to you.

No...not smarter and never will profess to be over anyone else...rather listen and determine whether what's being shared makes sense and compare to my limitations. Your posts do make me laugh Ed. Please continue to keep the bifocals clear to eliminate confusion ;)

Ganderite good insight as always. Never thought of that configuration to capture the bullet. I've got access to a lot of 1L containers and always wanted to do comparisons. This makes it more plausible for myself to put into action.

Now..... at first glance the Sierra was in one piece.. but not the Hornady
but when I tipped them out there was 2 pieces in each... thoughts please???

Nice work! My previous post about shooting into jugs was using 4 liter jugs, and 4 of those equates to around 24" of water penetration.

Interesting to see the jacket separation.
 
They look good to me. Two things cause the cup and core seperation, The RPM plus the impact with two different density metals. I would use either one for Deer or Moose in appropiate calibers.

For any bullet performance test, back up to at least 50 yards. 100 is better. A bullet yaws on exit and wig wags before settling down. The yaw will mess up a penetration test. Besides, we don't usually shoot moose at 10 yards. I have done so, but that was not the norm.
