water jug test info? RESULTS

Water testing is easy and interesting. A row of window washer fluid jugs works. There are empties in the garbage can at the local gas station.

I have also used a 18 liter spring water jug, shot end on. I am guessing about 20" of water. The expanded bullet was recovered from inside the jug. (7.62x39)

Crap I need new bifocals, I looked at the posting list and thought Ron AKA made the above posting.

Now I have to be nice to RonR because he is a 1000 times smarter the the "other" Ron. :stirthepot2:

I have to go now and put my Viking helmet on and go rape and pillage in some other reloading forum.

Don't forget your glasses.

For clarity, are these two pictures of the 120 Sierra's? And to confirm these didn't separate?

Nope, L sierra 120, Right 139 Hornady.
Hornady was definatly seperated before i touched it .. sierra must of been hangin by a thread .
Both lead cores havnt got much behind them ,
Can post pics of behind the mushroom when i can

What i find odd is the SD of the Hornady 139 and a Woodleigh 140gr is within 10 of each other..yet the woodleigh is hands down a stronger bullet an shows this on game.
Im yet to test a Woodleigh, but in months i will do so just to Comparr!!

WL........Sectional density has nothing to do with bullet toughness. It is a number which corresponds the bore diameter and bullet weight.........period. All bullets of the same weight in the same caliber have the same SD, regardless of composition or shape.

If you section one of each bullet, the differences may be visible. Cut it in half with a saw or Dremmel, then rub on sandpaper to make the section clean.

The jacket can be thicker. The jacket might be thin near the tip and then get a lot thicker in the shank. The lead core can vary from almost pure lead to quite hard lead. And the lead hardness can vary, front to back.

I have never sectioned either of those two bullets, but would not be surprised to see the Woodleigh with a thicker jacket and harder lead core.

Ahh huh!! I see, I thought it was bullet specific for a reading of its strength so to speak... Thanks for the clarification!!

Hi mate, the Woodleigh is "Welded" to the Jacket... so its pretty much a Premium in my book and that in its self will explain why its superior, every time :)

...just thinking and very curious...water jug comparison between the weldcore and accubond 140gr in 7mm-08... I've got to get some Woodleigh's and try that.

two of my favourites Ron!

I've used both on Sambar Deer and both are my top choices! mind you not both were in 7mm, I used 140gr 277 in 270 win, and 140gr in 7mm 708.

Well mate down under we get RIPPED on prices of Bullets an factory ammo..

Example- Winchester supreme accubond loading 140gr .270 per 20 = $50 give or take..
7mm08 Federal Blue box per 20 $45
Woodleigh 140gr Weldcore per 50 - $40
Accubond per 50 - $65
sierra 120 - 100 - $50
hornady 139s per 100 - $60
TTSX per 50... $80
Simply because I am a tin ass, so to speak, I use the cheeps an that's Woodleigh for the Big deer.... either of the sierra or hornady for Fallow deer (white tail sized)

although the Woodleigh and Accubond are in my books So alike in performance, both good for breaking shoulder/leg bones unlike the hornady IMO.

hope that helps
