I’m looking to go out with a goose guide a couple times as a way of learning the ropes to get into some serious waterfowling myself.

I have no idea about prices and want to avoid sticker shock and getting taken advantage of when the hunt happens. What price range should I be looking at for 2 adults and 1-2 kids for a field hunt?

Are hunters expected to help setup decoys or just show up for the hunt and leave when it’s done, leaving the setup and takedown for the guide?

Am I expected to tip for service?

I will give you my advice as a former guide for St.Lawrence Outfitters. As a customer you are expected to have all the proper documentation( license ,stamp). You need a good working condition gun with appropriate non toxic ammo and safe gun handling. Clothing , prepare for the worst, layers. Easy to remove if it’s warm but hard to put on if cold and you didn’t bring it. If you don’t have camo just brown or black work fine. Snacks and hydration are a good idea as well as ear protection and shooting glasses,safety glasses.
A good guide will have multiple places at their disposal and scout regularly to stay on the X or just run traffic. Most reputable guides have been in business quite a while and are established.
As far as setting up decoys goes, just offer to place piles or carry things like panels for the blinds etc. Headlamps are helpful for setting up in the dark and avoid falling or tripping on equipment. Pay attention to how the decoys are set and wind direction etc. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during lulls inactivity.
As far as prices go I would think you’ll get a package deal at a fixed amount and extra per additional shooters. Junior should be discounted prices. I’d estimate a morning hunt with 2 adults and two junior shooters to be around $600. I’ll check and get back to update this post. A pic of my last goose hunt last year.
