I was thinking about using nail polish around my primers and around the case mouth and bullet to ensure that my loads are waterproofed. Does anyone have any opinions on this or a better idea?

Best regards,

For most uses, you don't need to use anything.
Unless you plan on swimming with them for extended periods, there shouldn't be a problem
Ive fallen in beaver ponds, and walked all day in the rain with a pocket full of cartridges, and never had an issue.

I agree

Besides i'm not sure I'd trust what happens when a gun goes of underwater!

Water shouldn't make it past a properly seated primer unless it is under pressure. I have had some underwater experiances as well and never had a problem.

Unless you plan on deep sea diving with a pocket full of cartridges, I wouldnt worry about it.

I was cleaning some .223 brass the other day. Had them submerged in hot soapy water for about 30 minutes or so. Then noticed that there was a full round in there  . I took the round out and opened it up using a rcbs kinetic bullet puller and it was as dry as a bone inside.

I agree, do not worry about it.

If your primer pockets are loose enough to leak under firing pressure, you MAY get water in the case, BUT you should have toosed these cases at the first sign of leakage, or you will be eating up your bolt face.

I had to recover a vehicle that had been completely submerged in a deep river for 2½ weeks. Inside was 20 rounds of 30-30 ammo (reloaded) The guy who owned the vehicle was dead, but his brother said to me, do you want them? I took them home and broke them all down, not because I was concerned about moisture, but because I do not trust another's reloads. Only one of the twenty had any moisture at all, and it was in the neck area. Turns out there was a scratch in the bullet jacket that had allowed a minute amount of moisture to enter. All would have fired, no problem. Regards, Eagleye.

Water Proof

I am not sure how, water proof you want, but I have sent .45 acp thru the wash in my pants after IPSC (oops), including, soap, fabric softener and the spin cycle, they worked just fine....

Yeah, when I was younger, I put a whole box of 22 rimfire through the washer, AND the drier!
They went boom when I fired them, thankfully, not in the drier.

I still get the "mother" voice when that comes up. I wish mom had NOT unloaded the dryer that day. I don't think a dryer gets hot enough to "cook" one off. Anyone ever had this happen?

I don't bother to seal primers and necks but I've know some people who do. They use brightly coloured nail polish so they can see where it has been spread. They use pointed toothpicks as an applicator. Easy enough to do but I've never seen a need to do it.
