I have a nice Browning Cynergy and the manual says to use either wax or oil on the stock but not both. Which is the best to preserve the stock as best as possible? I looked around for wax but it is hard to find these days.

Renaissance Wax was recommended to me here at CGN. A Google search will tell you all you want to know.

I bought two cans on Ebay for a reasonable price. After using it on a pile of rifles(as well as lots of antiques), I will continue to use it.

I use Howard's feed & wax. Some say it makes it difficult to refinish a stock down the line but the guns I use it on won't be refinished by me in my lifetime. It really covers scratches well.

I'm assuming it's expensive.

I just used minwax paste finishing wax over tung oil on a stock I redid. It turned out beautiful and looks like you can see deep into the wood. I'd recommend it.

Mother's Carbuna paste wax -- a premium car wax -- protects vehicles from rain, uv and other stuff. I use it on both wood and barrels -- reasonable priced - easy to apply - lasts a long time.

I'll put in another vote for Renaissance wax. It's a very high quality conservators product, that won't harm anything, and protects like gangbusters! Expensive, yes, but you get what you pay for, and a little goes a very long way. I got some originally for my old EJ Churchill side lock, to protect the original case colours, and now use it on just about everything ;-) !

where did you get it?

Actually got it off ebay, with a small container go their PRE-LIM cleaner/polish, it works very nice on cleaning old blued surfaces too, really gentle, but very effective.

Howard's

In my neck of the woods,
From families that produced 2 Nation Jr. Trap champions, to the old guard...

They all recommend Howard's Feed & Wax, available at Home Hardware in Canada.

I just purchased a Browning BT-99 Golden Clays trap shotgun. The first thing I did was tear it down, and apply the Howard's Feed & Wax to all wood surfaces.

To answer your question.... a bit of both. The Howard's bottle comes in a globby yellow coloured contents.... Apply it generously overnight... then rub in & out in the morning.

I would kindly show you the steps through a few pictures, but CGN refuses to accept a few downloads of Browning BT-99 Golden Clays magic. ;) (edited).... If I reduce any picture taken with my iphone 4s to 50%, CGN will allow the upload....
