is a 30-378 worth it? I tried talking my banker[wife] into letting me buy a 50,but she[wife]said NO!!!. But she did say i could get something[ a little cheaper to reload for ]. Or would i be better off with a 300 RUM? And no,I can not get rid of the wife. Any ideas?. i would only use it for long range[1500 yds] shooting.

Well I sure like mine, built on a Sako 995 action with a 28" barrel when it barks at the range it definately draws attention.
The RUMs are close but velocity can't quite be mached. I use 112.0 gr of H-1000 pushing a 174g SMK at sometimes over 3500 fps or back it down for hunting loads with 180 tripple shock at 110.0 at the same velocity.
I will admitt I have never shot an animal with this caliber, but some day I just might take it to the stand!
BTW I have heard of guys pushinf velocity close to 3400 with the 300 rums, and brass is definately cheeper, however that big 30-378 case is so nice to show off LOL!
I would wait untill you can talk your wife into that 50 BMG LOL! That would be something that would demand attention!!

Close call between the rum and the weatherby. I've got a .30-.378 sako trgs (it is the 995 action like jasonyuke) and love it. As for the difference between the two I think you get a little more with the weatherby but it certainly cost more. Barrel life will be comparble with the rum getting a little more due to the lower velocities and bass is way cheaper for rum (about $65 +tax and shipping gets you 20 brass the weatherby). Dont even think about factory ammo. I don't know how much the rum is but the .30-.378 loaded with barnes X is going for 125+ bucks a box!!!!!! That's over 6 bucks a round!!!!!

If you reload the cost differnece isn't noticable if you forget about the brass. I have a set of RCBS dies that cost me $65 dollars, and most likely what you'll pay for rum dies.

I'd suggest pricing everything, from the rifle right down to the components. The cost diffence in the long run might not fairly small, but i think the weatherby will be more expensive. So just work it out and see if the edge in performance is worth the cost to you. I love mine and wouldn't think of getting rid of it!!!!

I was in the same position and actually ordered an accumark in 30-378 when they were first released. However when offered a healthy profit for the unfired accumark,I sold it and had a custom 300 ultramag built for very little more.A friend has the 30-378 and his rifle drives a 180gr bullet just over 100fps faster than mine but he pays a riduculous amount for brass, and the recoil on his rifle is noticeably more.My rifle is also more accurate than his.Having fire both rifles,I am happy that I chose the ultramag.

I shoot a 338 Lapua, Rich, (in a Sako TRG-S) and it's not all what the magazine articles make it out to be. I can't safely get 3000 fps with 250 gr bullets from a 26" barrel, something the 338-378 will do with ease. The Lapua brass is no cheaper them Wby, nor are the dies etc. Don't get me wrong, I like the rifle, (except for the stock, what a piece of crap), but I really expected more from the press build up. You can equal what the Lapua does with the 338-300 RUM, usually at a much smaller investment in rifles. I'm rebarreling mine to a switch barrel, with 30" tubes in 338 Lapua and the two big case Wby cals (30 and 33), just to do some comparisons, then we'll really have some data to play with. FWIW - dan

I like the 338 RUM. A poor man's lapua.

IIRC, both the Lapua and the 378-series use the 416 rigby case as the parent, so performance (in terms of ft-lbs) should be in the same ballpark.

The 338's won't be moving as fast out of the barrel, but have more efficient projectiles (higher BC) available.

Plus, everyone has a .30 of some sort. a .338 just seems cooler somehow, to me. ;)

we all know he should just buy all four Ultramags than then his collection would be complete..................I was just trying to be curtious.:p

Hey Dan, don't mind him, he's just feeling bad 'cause he has to study and can't go shooting.
:p :p

When you get that built let me know and we will meet you half way to compare. We can bring a 30-378 ,a 338-378, and a 338 KT.There must be a good range in between us somewhere.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

well rr you dont have to go far for a comparison partner ,l had them all and a few times over, and as far as lm concerned the 338-378 with the same barrel length and powder has no match from either of the other ones partner.

That's wandering dangerously close to "Politically Correct" Dan...LOL
That Sako stock fits me quite well...unlike that damn kid's stock on your .340...

I don't know much about these cannons but I do have a question .
Was/is the 338 lapua a military sniper cartridge designed for long range shooting ? ( I'm under the understanding it was/is )
In what way are these other calibers better , other than cost ?
Thanks - Rick
