I really wish WBY would chamber the 35 whelen in the vanguard series. Would make a nice sporter for guys that have never tried one. Way cheaper then having one built. Ammo would be the biggest problem if you don't reload. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I was thinking whelen when I decided to have my .30/06 Howa rebarreled but decided it didn't offer enough over the .30/06 for the game I hunt. I don't think the whelen sells anywhere close to the 06 in factory rifles and I would guess that is why weatherby doesn't offer it in a the vanguard.

Factory ammo is available from Barnes, federal, Remington and Nosler not very hard to find. I bought a few boxes of all the above when I was making brass

Yup, lots of factory Ammo options out there, even a load with Fusion bullets. The Federal TBBC load is my go to for factory loads, but the $21/Box Remington 250gr ammo I picked up at the WSS clearout will be getting some trigger time. I snagged 6 boxes :)

The Vanguard 2 would be a nice platform for a Whelen.

True..I thought of that. But would be cost prohibitive and just better waiting for some kind of rem. to come along.

Cost prohibitive?
I understand the $$ side but, waiting for Wby to chamber a 35 Whelen might be like waiting for Hell to Freeze over.
then again, Glenn Frye and the eagles got back together long before Hell could freeze over.
So anything is possible I suppose.
Hence my suggestion to find a Vangard Series donor action , choose a barrel and contour and screw off and screw on the new barrel and Bobs your Uncle so to speak.
I know, I know easier said than done, but the results are so much quicker for the self gratification.
Just thinking out loud.

As was I, thinking out loud about WBY. If I was going to get another build done, rather then whelen I would go to .358STA. But then again I don't need it as I have a 338/378 wby and 340 WBY. I was thinking for the gophers between 30-06 size and 340WBY size.

Weatherby tried the 338-06 years ago, albeit in the MkV UltraLight rifles. That cartridge deserves to be supported

Not to hijack the thread but how about an 8x68s! Fills the gap plus can hunt anything on the planet with it.
Thinking about an 358STA as well. Already have a 358 Norma Mag so what the heck!

Damn!!! $21 bucks!

We pay $80-$90 for 20 Remington 250grainers......

TBBC Fusions would be in excess of $120 per 20

I cringe when I see Australian prices on components and ammunition, but there are some bright spots. Like the time I bought Norma 30-06 ammo for less than Blue box Federal. We'd slit throats for that deal.

If I lived where you do; I'd probably use Woodleighs in everything that would shoot them.
