WCFCC Nokomis 2012 - June 28- July 1, 2012

Yes scope #### night was a hoot. A single coyote made the mistake of picking on a small calf during scope ####, big mistake, after a mad dash for some ammo, he got cork screwed into the ground.

I had a great time out there and was in the lead until shot 10 thru 15 of the final 1000 yd on Sunday. My 8 (yes we used decimal targets - NRA LRFC) presented way out left I'm sure helped both Marc and Les hold further off right and I know Marc shot 9's for my 8's and those 2 shot (along with a ton of other great shots along the way) acquired Marc the Top Spot in FOpen.

Congrates to my two good friends, Bill in FTR and Marc in FOpen. Good shooting guys!

Keith

Congrats to my good buddy Marc for taking the F-O and to Bill for winning F-TR.

Good to see Farkie's face on the trophy. Is that Gordie's latest Prairie Chateau?

Just remember that at Nokomis, they call wind in cattle.

For example: below is an example of a 20 cow wind. Give or take a calf or a napper laying down. For you fancy flag readers, you would call it a 12-15 minute wind at 1000 yards. Maybe even 17 minutes if you're into .223.

Congrats to Bill (aka Scout) on FTR, Mark (otherwise known as "The Train") on FO, and Team Corlane Sporting Goods captained by Eric (aka Highmark), Scott, Darcy and Terry on the team shoot.

Kudos to Keith (aka Kodiak), the SPRA, the markers, ROs, the volunteers and the sponsors who helped make the shoot, and everything else associated with it (camping, BBQ, etc.) such a great time!

Great time had by all, with the exception of the coyote.

Be sure to bring all your yogurt to Winnipeg next year. We'll see if we can turn the wind machine on a little stronger than Nokomis managed this year ;)

....

Where on the range was this picture taken? Right of the line of fire it looks.

Yep, just to the right of the berm at 1000. But there are cows everywhere all the time. That's what makes them better than flags. On day two there was one cow that walked right along the berm in front of the targets during second relay. She was the Queen Of All Cows that day; Obviously bulletproof ;)

Team scores....

Team event was at the end of each day (in the strongest winds we hoped) after the individual 1000 yd event.
We shot 2+15 first day, 2+10 second day and finished with 2+15 on Sunday, so the possible was 150+100+150=400*4=1600 points.

Corelane Sports took a lead the first day and I talked the teams into a 2+10 for the supper day. A few wanted a 2+20 so they could re-gain some ground but I told them, the more shots you allow those guys, the further they pull ahead LOL. As a team, 1520/1600 = 95%, great shooting guys! Remember, the T/R shooters only use short range scores (300M to 600 yds) for classifications! As a team, I place your team in High Master class next time LOL.

Keith, I am pretty sure Fernando was shooting a .308 as I was scoring him during Team and there was significant report unlike a .223.

Rich, he used a 223 for the draw and I would think and he said his 223 would go straight to the bottom of the can LOL and a BIG case like a 50 Cal would be the ticket for the draw.

Big THANKS to Keith and the crew out in Saskatchewan - had a blast. As always, the Nokomis conditions brought a new element into the fray ... the verticals were some of the more extreme I've seen there, but I guess that's because we were not dealing with 25mph winds for a change. Looking forward to Winnipeg next year.

Here are a few pics of us taking out the aforementioned Coyote that happened to wander into the wrong place at the wrooooong time.

Many thanks to GSoD for having the mind to grab his camera and capture the moment.

O2Fish on the distress call
Highmark spotting with his scope
Me taking the shot since I was zeroed for 300m and rifle happened to be in the truck about 15yds away :D

Setting up to get the shot:

O2Fish on the distress call to stop the Yote to keep him in sight so I could take the shot:

Shot broke low on the shoulder causing him to do 3 (not so) graceful pirouette's then hightail it for the grove of brush to our left.....Ya, Ya....no bang/flop.

Where else on earth can you shoot a 1000yd competition during the day and whack Coyote's and gophers in the early evening?

Now that's a trio of serious Red Necks! Thanks for the great times boys, we'll do it all over again soon enough!

Okay time for me to input my kudos to Keith and gang. I have now been to Nokomis twice and have found the long drive to be very worth it. Keith puts on an excellent, well organized low stress shoot and his back-up crew are a perfect example of Sask. hospitality. Win or loose the gang of shooters at this match were absolute gentlemen to shoot with, and as someone stated on here I think Alberta cows might be playing 2nd fiddle to prairie cows as table fair. The only possible improvement might be a Tick fumagation??

Now it my turn guys.... I'd like to thank all the shooters once again for coming out to the windy, flat, cow and tick infested plains, aka Nokomis, and making this event the success to was. Without you shooters, all my work would have been in vain. I'd also like to thank our sponsors. Again, they also help drive these numbers up I'm sure. Make's it easier to justify paying $350 for a match if you get a chance at something worth close to 5 to 6 times that figure, plus all the fun we have.

A fellow club member said "based on all the good words everyone is saying, and how great our new target crew is, we could handle a National event" and asked, "Since Ottawa is having the first EVER F Class Nationals, what are the chances we could one day hold this event?" I laughed and said Ottawa has the Nationals and we out west get the Western Regional match once ever 3 yrs. Based on all the work I did before, during and still have to do after(shirts and thank you letters to suppliers), I'm not sure if I would want to run a National match. Yes, we probably could. Our Western Regional's have drawn 36 to 42 shooters yearly and the past history in Ottawa shows the Regional competitor numbers to be 2 to 3 times the size they get in Ottawa during past CFRC's, numbers wise so the range, crew and staff are capable of this sized event for the F Class group only. We do not have the targets to hold the entire CFRC!

Another thought, once we and the DCRA/CFRC go e-targets like the rest of the world, there will be no reading off the other guy's last shot. That will be a whole new game, each shot will be like a sighter in pairs or bisley style fire(triples), spectators viewing the same thing the shooter sees, etc.

One more thing, all you TICK worry type guys out there.... yes we all hate them and once you have one, every thing feels like another tick on ya...

but...The most common variety in Saskatchewan is the American dog tick or wood tick. Lyme disease can be carried by the blacklegged deer tick, which make up .03 per cent of Saskatchewan's tick population. While Saskatchewan and Alberta have low levels of blacklegged ticks, it's maybe only a matter of time before we start to see them established here as well.

It would be best to start a new thread for e-target stuff, but what you suggest above is not necessarily so. It is up to the e-target manufacturers and the shooting governing bodies to decide what they want the e-target system to show to the shooters and to the spectators. It is technically feasible for shots on other target to be made available for display - the question is, is this what is wanted?

I wasn't able to attend the Westerns but have been at all the other events this season at Nokomis, and as everyone knows, Keith does an incredible job! I'll put my vote in that Nokomis gets an opportunity to host an F-Class Nationals! And I will give Keith my commitment right now to lend him a hand as much as I can to help out. Brian
