With the deals on the Chinese military SKS's I feel a bit of SKS fever coming on.

It didn't help that wife and I watched We Were Soldiers (rewatched for me) this weekend. She liked it - but she had a pretty funny comment that the Vietnamese Colonel had a Southern Vietnamese accent.

Evidently it's pretty obvious to Vietnamese people if someone has a Northern vs Southern Vietnamese accent, kind of how we can tell if someone has a Southern US accent vs a Canadian one.

Anyways, it looks like the one used to bayonet the French officer at the 2:01 mark looks like the Chinese surplus one's Marstar has - but what about the rest scattered through the scene/movie (with blade bayo's?).

errr... The early Chinese SkS had a blade bayonet and those were produced until around 1965 I believe so it could be Chinese... And some Russian SkS had a spike bayonet...

those had to be russian SKS cos the chinese SKS werent in production yet . by the time chinese started producing the SKS, the french had left vietnam.

So far I see a bunch of russian (blade bayo),the guy who got bayoed in the back was a spike sks chinese or 49 russian cant tell if it is 3 or 4 ridges, there are mosins there m44's I think cause I see the flash supressors on some and possibly yugo's not sure,I think I caught a glimps of an svt ,,not sure.Got tired of freezing and replaying people getting blowed up!
Looks like the props for the movie came from eastern block countries.
Forgot to say I seen a long mag in there silouette of ak47!

and about the accent , remember , to the vietnamese it was a civil war , there was no boundary as which side you were raised and which side you died for. just the the american civil war , quite often brothers faced each other in the battle fields.

War movie makers tend to miss those little details.

True enough. Still, it would be a bit weird to if they made a US civil war movie with a Confederate commander with a distinctly English accent and a US commander with a southern accent.

When did the Chinese SKS's make it in?

You may find it ... 'different' - thing is... even those Vietnameese who 'like USA' AND 'Western Culture' - they still hate US at the same time. Even deepest Southern Vietnam, everyone there, every single person in the country - love and hate... for a few very good reasons.

Been there, liked the country and people a lot!!! Have tons of pix taken, tons of miles on rented scooter too. There are several places you can get Western food, a few Australian owned 'eateries'. There is decent local beer, 'vino' and real (hard) alcohol there. Beer is for Brits and vino is for Italians, old good hard 40%+ alcohol is for men.
If you are staying at a hotel and wanna have good times... get closer to the curb when it gets darker...

If you ever go over there to have a nice vacation - go to Phu Quoc Island after you spend 2-3 days in Saigon, rent a scooter on the island (if you can ride one) for about $8 a day; get it for a week at once. Return flight from Saigon to the island is about $100.
The best vacation one can have - in many ways. You can find almost everything you want on the island.

If you are to go to the island, I can refer you to a place where you will get great food and best vine on the island!!!

Pla

When did the Chinese SKS's make it in?

My experience was from 69 to 72 in the north, as far as I know the PLA units integrated with the NVA kept their own SKS's. China, did not trust their Allies with Chicom guns,NVA units and VC used Soviet as far as I remember. The one thing I remember clearly Chicom SKS had stamped receiver with pinned barrel, reffered to as muskets by NVA.

Blades were used in Vietnam although who knows what models were used during the French part and the American part of the war.
As seen here from the most famous victor charley ever!

Also on a side note most of the army during the later part of the US war was made up of Chinese regulars and there air force aces were secretly made up of Russains.
