I was wondering about the wear and tear I will cause by removing my shotgun butt stock for easier fitting into my backpack ( I will be carrying it on a motorcycle ). Total length about 37 inches, stock off it is 26 inches and 11 for the stock... fits fine taken apart.

It is a Mossberg 500 12 gauge, 18.5 barrel, wooden stock cut down a bit shorter and a slip-on Limbsaver pad... so it's easy to get at the bolt/screw in the stock.

I know it is not designed to be taken on and off repeatedly... I may only do this 5 to 10 times a year.

If done carefully, will I damage my shotgun?

Thanks in advance,
OKH

If you take the barrel off also , the largest piece ( the frame with magazine attached)will be about 22 inches.

thanks for the replies....

you made me think about this a different way... I have seen videos on removing the barrel... seems straightforward... how difficult is it to remove the magazine, leaving the reciever and stock attached?

You would probably have a better gun by substituting the factory stock with a Butler Creek side folding stock, then removing the barrel for transport in your backpack. With the barrel removed and the stock folded the longest length should be around 24 inches. You would have a firearm that could have the barrel installed and the stock folded out, in less than a minute. As for removing the mag, it can be done but requires tools to remove and to lock it back inplace because the barrel is fastened by the mag tube. Also when the mag is not in the frame the long follower spring wants to come out of the tube and it doesn't store easily.

Dump the Mossberg and find a short barreled Win. Model 12. They were built to come apart at the front of the receiver as a proper take down gun.

barrel comes off of a 500 easy...its made to come on off.

It takes about 10 seconds to remove the barrel on either an 870 or 500. Forget taking off the stock, requires tools. Leave the mag tube as well, it is brazed or threaded

The Winchester 12 idea sounds like a good one. I watched an interesting video about them.

By the way... are there any folding / collapsable stocks which do NOT use a pistol grip?

Thanks, OKH

No! There are no commonly available stocks that fold or telescope that don't have a pistol grip. There may be some rare example of a folding stock without a pistol grip but nothing you would be able to acquire reasonably. The advantage of the folding stock with the pistol grip is, you can shoot the firearm when the stock is folded ,if you had to. If you check out the "Equipment exchange" Mossberg folding stocks come up once in a while at reasonable prices and will allow you to transport your 500 in your back pack with the stock folded and the barrel removed. For a video on disassembling your Mossberg 500 goto www.youtube.com and search "DISASSEMBLING A MOSSBERG 500"

Thanks all for your replies.... good advice.

I think I will work with my MOssberg, and removing the stock to carry on my motorcycle.

Anyone have a Winchester model 12 they want to part with??:D

OK hiker, how bout sacrificing a butt pad by boring a large hole in the middle so you can get at the bolt with out removing the pad.
