The postman came yesterday with my brand new S&W M&P9 :) However, upon stripping it I discovered some finish wear that surprised me for a brand new pistol. The barrel is filthy, the feed ramp has a lot of finish wear, there's brass residue on the breech face and under the slide, and there's finish wear on the top of the frame rails. I was reading online and apparently S&W puts 30 rounds through each pistol before leaving the factory. I haven't bought a new gun in a long time, so I'm looking for some feedback here - is this the same amount of wear that your new M&P had when it arrived? The brass residue and dirty barrel are easily explained by the test firing, but I'm surprised by the feed ramp and frame rail wear. I bought from a CGN sponsor, but if this is normal I don't want to bother them about it.

That's minimal - the rails aren't melonited - they're MIM, so the melonite process can't be used on them, the coating is actually quite tough, but the slide is melonited, so the rails wear. Incidentally, Melonite itself is clear - like the Tennifer that Glock uses, so the blackening is a finish coating. Trust me, that's not a lot of wear - when you get a lot of wear, the rails actually change shape, and the locking block and takedown lever face become shiny and bright.

Perfectly normal. If the thing sat in a display case and was subject to handling it's going to have some wear. A barrel should have preservatives in it. Those attract dust etc.

check for wear mark on the lock lug (barrel) if they are obvious, the gun was not tested, it was used.

Mine had a little bit of brass marking and shiny spots on contact points. I don't recall the barrel being dirty, some heavy oil or something in there though. I wouldn't worry about it overly much.

I sold an M&P9 with +/- 1500 rounds down the barrel, and it had less wear than yours........

Breech face indicates more than 30 rounds fired, IMHO.

I have the M&P 40. Mine had no wear at all when it arrived. It looks like yours now 600+ rounds later. Did you buy it from a dealer associated to a range?

Same here. When i got my M&P 40 none of the rails were worn down at all. It was caked in oil though. Feed ramp had no wear on it either. same thing with all the spots on my gun. Mine only has a little bit more wear on it about 800 rounds later.

The one I bought band new some 5-7 years ago did not look like that! Also two used ones I got in the last couple of years did not look like that even when I sold them! I don't think that gun was just test fired. The feed ramp and the wear under the slide shows the wear from thousandths of rounds.

I bought mine new and it had some wear but nothing like that.. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if the outer finish is good and not marked up it's not going to make a difference, i have over 15k through mine and it's still going bang
