I have a brand new Weatherby Vangard Backcountry in 30-06 that has seen less then a box of shells through it. It is the full stainless with the fluted barrel and grey pepper laminate stock. I also have the removable mag conversion kit, and the weaver rail for it as well. Anyone know the approx. value of the whole package? My Dad bought the whole package a few months ago and we sighted it in but Dad passed away last month and I'd like to use the money to but Mom something nice she would use. Any info would be welcome. Thanks

My condolences to you and your mother.

In regards to your rifle, its a bit of an odd duck. The back country rifles came with a Bell & Carlson stock. Yours is the first I've heard of with a laminate. I would think with the detach kit included it would be worth $800. As well, stainless weatherby's are now discontinued...

did you see that it was made in Japan ????

You appear to be surprised, did you not realize that all Vanguards are made by Howa for Weatherby? The Mark V has also been made in Japan and in Germany, since Weatherby also contracts out the manufacture of that rifle as well.Weatherby is a marketing firm that sells guns, they don't actually manufacture them.

If I remember correctly, they were in the 2008 Weatherby catalogue in the Custom section--possibly as the R.O.Y. (Rifle Of the Year; Roy Weatherby is the founder of the company). The Back Country with standard stock was about $1100-$1200 last year if you could get one. The laminate stock for this model was not available last year, but in 2008 I think it was $200-$300 more. The magazine kit came out in 2008 as well (and if I had a penny to my name I'd make you an offer on it) and is about $45-$50 new.

Give Dave Jennings a call at Jennings Outdoor Sports: jenningsoutdoorsports.com. He's the only authorized Weatherby service centre in Canada and knows them inside and out. He's a great guy and could probably give you a good idea as to it's value.

As far as:

... as stated above, the Vanguard actions are all made in Japan as they use the Howa 1500 action--just as Smith & Wesson and Mossberg offered a version at one time (don't confuse it with current Mossberg quality). It's an excellent product that is one of the best buys on the market. From what I've heard, the only reason the Back Country was discontinued is that the Stainless Vanguards were not economical to produce and would raise the price of what was supposed to be an entry level rifle.
