Weatherby Fan's

When I saw this thread running to 18 pages in 10 days I was a little afraid it would run into a pi$$$$ing contest.
I have never owned a Weatherby but appreciated the potential the cartridges generated, and the stock designs.
When allowed to fire a .340 Weatherby in a synthetic stock is was impressed with how the recoil was absorbed, rating it about the same as my .338 Winchester in a Remington 700 Classic.
Appreciate the collections, and when you don't like what someone else is saying you have the right to say nothing.
Guns are like people. Some are pretty and some are ugly and some are pretty apt to stay that way. Regardless, some of the comments were ugly.

You need to realize a lot said is tongue in cheek and the instigation you may be seeing as malicious is actually in good fun (I know it is on my part). I am sure most of these folks that are bantering would be quick to sit down and have a beer together......if I was buying because Weatherby fans need to save their money to buy their over priced, tacky garbage:D

It is $15,500 now...for a McMillan stocked Winchester M70. And you say Roy liked selling gimmicks....

You need to look up the definition of gimmick. Everything D'arcy does actually works as described he just charges what people are obviously willing to pay for it. And no, even if I had the money, ibwoul ne'er spend that much on a rifle without quality wood involved.

Gimmick
Verb : Provide with a gimmick; alter or tamper with: "restaurants gimmicked up like barns".
Noun : A trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business.

Whitelines? Roy invented white spacers:

Much classier (and cheaper):

The Bavarian stock looks like it has downs syndrome

LOL, funny but I have to dis-agree this time. I just sold mine and it was a beautiful gun. I happen to be a fan of the Bavarian style stock. The one on the 85 just didn't fit me well.

Nice wood. Yeah I haven't found one yet that fits me. Oh well.

I found this on GunsAmerica.

Griffin & Howe built Weatherby MK V in .378Wby. Built in '66 it shows the timeless beauty of the Weatherby action and the classic style stock.

Maybe we can get a couple of the Hold-outs to agree that this is a beautiful gun.

Hell, it even has a red recoil pad and is in left hand, what more will it take:p

I don't need google to enhance my vocabulary. :)

He markets the rifle as "the most expensive" synthetic stock rifle...one that won't fail because everything is over-built and over-engineered. That is the gimmick - the perception of a need/usefullness of the work performed and the bragging rights are part of it too.

I suspect that there are not too many folks whose lives depend on their rifles - on a daily basis - are using his rifles. So, if something else is good enough for the PH, then why is the same thing not good enough for a fellow whose rifles spend most of their life in a safe?

But I probably am one of those that "just don't get it". ;)

I also agree with your comment on good wood, where the blank can be several thousand dollars. That in combination with the manual labour required to carve, fit, checker and finish justifies a large amount of money. But nobody ever says that such a stock will do anything other than create pleasure for the owner (fit aside).

I do love the weatherby rifles and cartridges. I even like the stocks, but, for the hunting I do, they aren't practical for me. But they sure are nice eye candy.

Here's a pic of my customized weatherby vanguard in 300 roy. I do lots of blind hunting so weight and ease of carrying isn't that important to me.

:) You've got one. That is very nice. Very nice wood with clean lines. However, the only 'flaw' I see is that it's the wrong hand :p. Very nice!!

Very nice. It's funny, the purpose behind the Bavarian style and the Weatherby as far as fit is nearly identical. One is classy and does what it does subtly. Too bad that one went down the road.

That is a very nice rifle.

And for 1899:
Many lifetime PH's spend $10k or more on their everyday rifle. I know of a few (read I don't know a few) that do have Echols rifles.
Great post on your part though.
