Weatherby Mark V TRR Custom Magnum in .338 Lapua

I've owned 1 since march and I like it. I can't compare it to the trg as I've never shot one. The only complaints I would have is the barrel is on the skinny side and the trigger wasn't as user adjustable as I had thought. I spent $75 bucks to have the trigger worked on and she is a real shooter. I'm fairly new to long range shooting but I've put together 7" groups at 900m with the gun. The farthest I've stretched it is 1070 m and I can put hits consistantly on my ODPL plate.

Ive shot a TRG 42 many times and have no experience with the weatherby. Going by the above post if the sako is reasonably close in cost I would buy the sako. The trigger is one of the best ive ever used and you can easily send down 5 shot groups without worrying about the barrel. Also if I recall correctly the weatherby comes with an ugly bell and carlson(my opinion) stock so in terms of pure aesthetics the sako wins for me as well.

From what I've seen the sako is about a grand over the price of the TRR. If your like me and the savage 110 ba or the remmy mlr don't float your boat the weatherby is worth a serious look. I think it's a great platform to get into the 338 game with. The mark v action is solid and the b&c stock works very well. I'm getting sub moa out of the gun consistantly and all I've done is tune the trigger and work up a load. Im no expert but I don't regret buying it one bit. I just can't wait to burn out the factory barrel and see what it will do with the krieger I've got waiting for it!

I have never liked the design of the weatherby bolt. typical simple two lug designs are extremely strong and far easier to accurize. The weatherby system looks like a ### toy. I have not seen one in 338LM, has this design changed from the six stud system? The accuracy of the TRG is above reproach. These rifles are in use as sniper weapons systems because they are well built, accurate as hell and proven. ALso, a 1.5" 100 yard gurantee is nothing to be bragging about. Weatherby uses this as a sales pitch. That is too imorecise for long range shooting

The bolt has 9 locking lugs. I've read that some smiths don't like working on them but I've also been told the mark v action rarely requires work like a remy. I do know that I like the short bolt throw (56 degrees) and the feel of the action. I guess when it's time for the new tube I can report as to how much accurizing was required. And despite the 1.5" guarantee I can say from experience that it shoots much better. I'm not claiming its a TRG but its no slouch either. All depends on what a guy wants to spend I guess.

I do have the Mark 5 TTR RC (Range certified) mofel in 30-378 and very pleased with it except the big muzzle brake does make a hude thump, but with zero recoil.
Shoot .5 grp @ 200 yards and will hit targets at 600yards anytime with the reloads. never had chance to shoot Sako tho.

Or build your own for about the same. A remington MLR in 338LM has a proven action and arguably the safest bolt/ chamber design going (althought they did go with an M16 extractor in the LM). Add a top end barrel with a 9.25 twist and you will be into the lot for abouot 2700 with accurizing and professional barrel installation. That will have potantial accuracy greater than even the Sako. Getting a stock for the remington if you don't like what it comes with is damned easy, because they are the iPhone of rifles. There have been many for sale on this site, and Hirsch Precision has the barrels you want. You could even talk with him about a custom action if you want to torture yourself, but don't sweat that. If I were building a 338LM I would use a remington as a basis
