Weatherby Meat Eater Thoughts?

There are better rifles for that price. Nothing wrong with the Howa/Vanguard platform, but with this you're paying for the Meateater name. That used to be an attractive feature, but since Meateater is now owned by an anti-gun owner (Peter Chernin, owner of The Chernin Group) I won't be buying any of their branded gear or subsidiary company gear (First Lite, Phelps Game Calls, FHF Gear, Wild and Whole) or anything promoting them.

I didn't know that about Meateater. Just had a quick read, at first glance it is disappointing

I didn't know about it, but its not about to change my opinion of the company either. They are probably the best thing to happen to hunting in a decade or more from my perspective. It is rare that a company whos basis is hunting can create the kind of mainstream appeal that MeatEater has, and they have been able to create a media empire out of it with material that covers the gamut from hunting to fishing to foraging to cooking to conservation.

Still not paying $500 for their name on a rifle though. lol

I agree on both points but am still disappointed.

I love what Steve was able to accomplish when he started Meateater. But his pursuit of the American Dream caused him to make questionable financial choices. A company dedicated to environmental stewardship that chose to take investment money from a known polluter (say, Dow Chemicals who released 1.36 million pounds of polluted water in 2019 and are the #2 water polluter in the US) would have their judgement and motivation rightly questioned. Likewise, someone operating in the hunting space who takes $50M from a known anti-gun advocate deserves some examination.

I'll say it again, I loved what he did early on, but I can't square taking millions from your enemy and then trying to sell that the money came without strings. It just doesn't pass the sniff test.

Weatherby Vanguards are an excellent bang for your buck rifle. Whether it's the base model with grey stock and no frills, or the upgraded ones with fluted barrels and cerakote jobs, they'll get the job done. They're accurate and bomb proof. Howas are an even better bang for your buck, as they're usually 70 cents on the dollar compared to the Vanguards, and use the same barreled action. You can't go wrong with them, so if you like the looks and features of the ME, then go for it.
