Weatherby MkV - Worth It?

So, say there was this German mfg Weatherby MkV in .30-06 that was used but "minty"... blued with fancy wood stock & Leupold bases for ~ $1,500 would it be "worth it"? :eek:
 
I've never owned one, but if I did buy one, it would be a weatherby cartridge, like a .270, .257 or a .340:cool: . But if you have a need for a .30-06, then buy it.:rockOn:
 
Having owned two mark V rifles myself,I would say that the price is too high.I paid less than that for each of my new Mark Vs,and I was disappointed in the accuracy of both.I sold them both and will never own another.

I hear what you're saying... but what year did you pay half for yours? Like just a few years ago any decent USGI 1911A-1 was ~ $350. Now try & find one for double that....

It was several years ago at a store closeout and I paid $1200 for each rifle.However you can still buy a lot of rifles that are just as good or better for that same $1500.Sako comes to mind.
 
While I've never owned a Mark V, I've handled a few and shot one in 340 once. I'd never own an action that uses the trigger to release the bolt...kind of hard to get the overtravel out of the trigger. I'd buy a new Sako 85 for a few bucks more before I'd spend $1500 on a German Weatherby...seemed to me the Jap ones were machined better.

A local shop had used one last fall on commission in 7mm WBY. They were asking $800.00. It sat there for 6 months before the owner took it home.
 
I have owned a Lazermark in .300Wby and my current Deluxe in .378Wby and would have no issues buying another. The .300 was a MOA or less rifle and no issues with trigger. They are not supposed to be benchrest rifles ;)
 
I have a Mark V and it is a beautiful and very well made firearm. if you want a showpiece buy it ( $1500 is too much though ) If you want a shooter there are a lot of great rifles for under $1000 new.
 
I don't know how true this is but when I was at a shooting range a local gunsmith was mentioning that a weatherby mark V in 30.06 is a somewhat of a rare breed.
And a weatherby rep had offered to buy it sight unseen,from him due to that very issue.

Might be worth investigating

Actually, a German made Mk V in -06 is a rare cat. I have a German MkV from the early 60s in 300, good gun, decent shooter, but I paid all of $700 for it. They didn't regularly sell German made Mk Vs in standard calibers on this side of the pond, so finding one is unusual. Not worth what he's asking unless you're a collector though, and then relative worth means nothing. I recall reading about a gent finding one in 7x64 some years back too, only one I've ever heard of in that caliber. - dan
