Weatherby SA-08...duh

Had a SA08 for quite a few years, never an issue. Regret selling it and plan on getting another. Buddy I used to shoot clays with had a semi Beretta (cant recall the model ) and my Weatherby never failed once, to his basically failing with taget loads 100% of the time.

A few years ago, I bought two really nice SA-08's, 12 & 20ga. I fired the 12 ga. a bit, but don't recall if I fired the 20 at the same time or not. Well, the clay pigeon season came along, and I got out the 20. Couldn't get it to load, short of dropping a shell in the side port. You guys with these shotguns will know where this is going.

Okay, consult Dr. Google. First video explains it quite nicely how you are to operate these actions. Jeez! When all else fails, rtfm.

Haven't been back out shooting since, so it will be a bit of a learning session. I was used to my dear old Beretta 301, and missed the extra little switch on the Weatherby. I'd like to get some use out of these guns before I croak or our wise government bans them.

Well kjohn if you can not rtfm you can always get the BFH !!!
;)
Always fun to experience a new gun and its little quirks if you will.

I think that the two valve system aka operator error is more than likely for some of the issues. It was enough to scare me off, if others are having good results that’s good to hear.

I had SA-08s in 12 and 20. Worked well, but I did not like having to change valves. When Weatherby introduced their "Element" inertia drive guns I bought the "Canadian Upland" model in 12 and 20. Less cleaning than gas guns and so far they cycle everything. Supposedly more recoil, but I don't notice. Hunt pheasant mostly.

I have the same issue. Works great with hunting loads but won't reliably cycle skeet/light loads. A year or so ago I tried to locate the correct gas valve, but couldn't find one anywhere.

Bought my son an SA-08 20 when he passed his hunter safety. No issues, functions flawlessly with all loads and came form the factor with a light load and heavy load gas valve. Perhaps yours was used and only came with one piston/valve....

Had to tear mine down to pieces and clean the hell out of it to get it to cycle target loads. The spring in the butt stock was gummed up from the factory.

X2 my back spring tube is now pitted inside and unless i clean it after every hunt it will no longer cycle loads

I have the 28 G. SA 08(which is not made anymore) but it has never missed a beat. Shot over 40 pheasants in the last couple years and compared to the Benelli my partner has it is as good, and was significally cheaper. But now benelli makes a 3" 28 gauge hmmm...
