Hello: I have just purchased a slightly used SA08. It came with all its original packaging and manuals. I noticed that the 3 chokes do not state if they are full, modified or improved cylinder. The manual does not describe which is which either. They each have either one nick, 3 nicks, or 4 nicks across the top near the wrench marks. Can any of you assist with this question? The manual does not provide any instructions for the use of the stock shims either. When I purchased my Mossberg 935, 5 years ago, each shim was identified by thickness and number and it came with detailed installation instructions. I assume the installation of the shims will be similar but if anyone can provide some help it would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rick in London.

Hi Rick,
I purchased a new SA-08 myself and found this info on another site;

I notch is the Full
III notches is the Modified
IIII notches is the Improved Cylinder

Hope that helps,

Regards, Kevin

Kevin's got it. Let me know if yours cycles trap loads with the lighter cylinder installed. Mine won't. :(

Mine hasn't had any issues with light trap loads. Might need to break it in? One thing I did notice is that the tube that houses the recoil spring in the buttstock was full of a fairly heavy grease. I removed the threaded end cap where the buttstock bolt threads into (under spring tension, watch for flying parts) and removed the recoil spring and plunger and cleaned up the excess grease by running a few patches through the tube. Seemed to improve cycling a bit but it really wasn't an issue to start with.

My Sa-08 has the chokes identified as Heavy and Light loads -- make sure you have the proper one in. Mine is the black stocked one and is used as a thick cover woodcock gun -- very reliable. Seems to be based on the old Beretta 300 series but with inter-changeable pistons that eliminate the 300"s fussiness about loads --great little gun for the $

I've only got about a box through mine so I will give it a bit more time before confirming the light loads will not cycle. I will, however, in the meantime, clean the excess grease as noted and see if that affects performance. I am a tad disappointed with the way the gun comes up on target at the trap range though. I can nail about 70% of the clays (a sad rate to be sure) with my other guns, but can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn door with the SA-08. Could just be the ergonomics are not ideal for my long arms and old eyes. I must try patterning the thing this spring to make sure there is not some other pointing issue.

That is one fine looking spaniel there too, Grouser! My father-in-law had several and I have good memories.....

Mine wont cycle target loads marked "light". I just be sure to buy the heavy ones, ususlly the same price where i get mine... the gun has about 500 rounds on it so i doubt it will break in much more. other than this small inconvenience, the gun has ran perfect.

Thanks for the help and advise guys!! I actually haven't had a chance to fire it yet because I wrecked my knee and haven't been able to get out yet. Grouser, I see you also have a Small Munsterlander. Mine turns 1 year old this month.

Can you use any briley choke with this shotgun, I'm looking for an extra full choke for the 20 gauge and not having much luck.
