Hello!

I would like to know what do you think about this rifle in 338-378 caliber? It is good for the price?
Am I better to build a custom rifle instead of to buy this one.
I am going to use this rifle for long range shooting and hunting.

Weatherby has never been known as a "precision or target" rifle.
Even the overpriced 1 in the B&C stock you posted a photo of is at best normally a 1 moa shooter.
There are far better calibers and rifles available for the same or less $$.
To get exactly what you want with guranteed accuracy, a custom or semi custom would be your best bet.

They 338-378 might not be the best place to start accuracy wise. Not that it isn't accurate, but the 338 Edge, 338 Lapua, or 338LAI are all probably better choices.

Bell and Carlson and "extreme accuracy" do no belong in the same rifle.....From my point of view McMillan or better (if there is such a thing) is what you want on such a rifle.
I hear Robertson are good, but I have no personal experience.

I have a 338-378 Accumark that I use for big game hunting.
The 338-378 Wby is the king of the 338s, and it has over 5000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.
I like the Accumark because it doesn't weigh a ton.
A big factor if you're going to hunt with it.

The 338LAI gebnerates 6400 ftlbs of energy at the muzzle, so I guess that would make the 338378 the queen of 338s.
The Wbys are ok hunting rifles when used for what they were designed for, hunting large game at distances under 500 yards, but for any real long range work they just are not accurate enough. Their 1moa guaranteed accuracy is just not good enough for anything much further.

Watch Thompson Long Range hunts on DVD.. that will reaffirm the long range accuracy of those Weatherby 30-378 and 338-378's. Those guys down in the states were creaming deer at 1011 yards with those guns.

All the shots in the videos were over 700 yards I think.. Very impressive rifles..

That's funny!:D

For what you pay for a Wby TRR you would be far better off with a custom rifle. The same money will buy you twice the accuracy of a Wby.

700 yards is a chip shot!

That is true and yes I find 700 yards to not be any sort of challenge.:D

We do the same thing here, just not on camera as much.

Sorry I guess I don't impress as easily, they are still just weatherbys:rolleyes:

DVDs like anything that is taped or filmed always has editing to rely on to ensure the hero who is shooting puts on a perfect show.

The thing I really dislike about Weatherby is the price of brass and ammo. Have you priced out 338-378 brass and ammo lately? That'll be enough to put you off your feed.

I totally agree with you on that one. I have no idea about the ballistics or characteristics for a precision rifle and what would be optimum. Just reporting what they were showing the rifle was capable of..

thompson long rang vids are impressive, but nothing that special. if you want to do some research on good .338 cals go to longrangehunting.com
build a .338 edge.cheaper ,more customizable. i have a .340 weatherby, its nice but there are better choices. like an edge.(thats what im building)

I like my 338 Gaillard! It is an 8mm necked to 338 with an improved shoulder and less case taper! It's a bit smaller than the Edge, but it packs punch. 250 Gr HPBT @ 3050 FPS is nothing to complain about! Brass is cheap and easy to fire form. Heck fire form rounds are only about 70 FPS slower and will still group an inch @ 100! Weatherby is way overpriced in my opinion, but so is Lapua nowdays with the cult following! I guess I've never been one to follow the leader! Custom rifle is by far better to go with than factory! Just my opinion though!

Is that 8mmRem Mag that it is based on?
If so I built a rifle in a similar configuration a few years ago. 8 Rem Mag nearly straightwalled, with a 40 degree shoulder. Shot real well with 250s and in about the same velocity you are getting.
I miss that rifle:(

Want to know more about these 338 boomers, longrangehunting.com gives you all the info you could possibly want by those who use them in the field.

Shawn is also posting there so you can get info right from the designer on his 338 EDGE.

There are several versions of the 338-300RUM, his being the most popular by far. Nice design, nice performance.

The 338-378Wby shares a similar case capacity to the 338-416 Rigby improved which is quite a bit more then the 338Lapua AI/Edge family. Or you can go crazy and get a 338-408CT. That'll get those 300's moving.

As for the high end Wby, I thought they used Kreiger barrels?

At this end of the case food chain, it all costs a pretty penny. Just got some new pricing on the 338 Lapua, sit down before asking. The Lapua, Wby and Jamison CT are in the same price range.

Then there is the cost of the 300gr slugs which just keep going up in price.

How about 100 to 120+ gr's of powder per bang?

No matter what, shooting this cal is expensive but the LR horsepower is impressive.

I haven't played with a 338-408 CT yet, but I've used all the others mentioned so far(my rifles and other shooters') and a few others. In terms of case capacity, 338 Win Mag, 340 Wby, 338 Gaillard/Swamp Donkey/STW, 338 Lapua/338 RUM, 338 Lapua AI/338 Edge, 338-378 Wby, 338-416 Rigby Improved, 338-408 CT, 338-50 BMG. There will be some variation due to different brass etc, but that's a reasonable guide. Keep the pressures similar and the bigger case will produce the fastest speeds. There is no substitute for horsepower. Just build the big ones heavy, and with a good brake. FWIW - dan

You bet!! 8mm Rem Mag, call it the Swamp Donkey or 338 Gaillard, they are both practically the same! I figured 90gr of RL25 was enough bang for my buck! It ain't the biggest or strongest out there, but a very worthy competitor!
